The Angels released Anderson on Thursday. He was designated for assignment Wednesday and opted to hit the open market rather than remain in the organization at Triple-A. Anderson hit .205 with zero home runs, one steal and 29 strikeouts in 83 at-bats with the Angels this year.

The Angels designated Anderson for assignment Wednesday. The move clears a spot on the 40-man roster for infielder Scott Kingery, who was called up from Triple-A Salt Lake. Though Anderson was able to claim a spot on the Angels' Opening Day roster coming out of spring training, he struggled in his limited playing time, slashing .205/.258/.241 with one steal, three RBI and a 32.2 percent strikeout rate across 90 plate appearances this season. The two-time All-Star will now be exposed to waivers, but in the likely event that he goes unclaimed, he'll have the ability to accept an outright assignment to Triple-A Salt Lake or pursue free agency.

Anderson is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Blue Jays. Anderson made three straight starts at second base this past weekend, but he's shifted back to a bench role for the Angels' first two games against the Blue Jays after the team welcomed Yoan Moncada back from the injured list. Anderson's playing time could be limited moving forward while the quartet of Nolan Schanuel, Luis Rengifo, Zach Neto and Moncada typically makes up the Angels' starting infield against both right- and left-handed pitching.

Anderson will start at second base and bat ninth in Sunday's game against the Tigers. Anderson thus far seems to be the primary beneficiary of Mike Trout's (knee) recent move to the injured list. With Trout on the shelf, Kyren Paris has now made three consecutive starts in the outfield, opening up the keystone for Anderson in all three of those contests. The two-time All-Star is still slashing a woeful .179/.220/.196 over 60 plate appearances with the Angels on the season, so despite the recent uptick in playing time, Anderson likely won't warrant much attention outside of AL-only leagues.

Anderson is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Rangers, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports. Anderson will give way to Kevin Newman at shortstop after starting at the position in seven of the Halos' previous nine games. Both players will soon see their opportunities in the middle infield dry up, as Zach Neto (shoulder) looks poised to return from the 10-day injured list to make his season debut as soon as Thursday.
