The Giants officially placed Chapman (personal) on the paternity list Wednesday. Chapman left the team prior to Tuesday's 10-0 win over the Orioles to observe the birth of his child, but the Giants waited until Wednesday before officially deactivating him. Casey Schmitt was recalled from Triple-A Sacramento to provide some infield depth in the short term. Per MLB rules, Chapman will be away from the Giants for at least one game and as many as three while on the paternity list, so expected him to rejoin the club no later than Saturday.

The Giants are expected to place Chapman on the paternity list Tuesday, Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic reports. Chapman looked to be getting a maintenance day, as he was out of the lineup for Tuesday's matchup with Baltimore, but he's actually stepped away from the team to be with his growing family. The veteran third baseman -- whose absence Tuesday is just his sixth of the campaign -- should be back with the Giants in time for Friday's series opener in Kansas City.

Chapman is absent from the lineup for Tuesday's game in Baltimore. It's a rare day off for Chapman, who leads all third basemen with 146 games played this season. Brett Wisely will get a start at the hot corner and bat ninth in the series opener.

Chapman went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Wednesday's 13-2 win over the Brewers. Chapman has gone 17-for-49 (.347) with four homers, two stolen bases and 10 RBI over his last 14 games. The third baseman's long ball Wednesday gave the Giants their 10th run, and he later exited the blowout win to get some well-earned rest. Chapman is up to 24 homers, 73 RBI, 93 runs scored, 15 steals and a .251/.334/.456 slash line over 142 contests.

Chapman went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer and a stolen base in Sunday's win over the Padres. Chapman took Joe Musgrove deep in the fourth to get the Giants on the board for his 23rd of the season. He now has at least a hit in 11 of his last 12 starts and is slashing .357/.386/.643 with a 1.029 OPS over that span. Chapman also swiped his 15th base of the year and is 15-for-17 on stolen base attempts this season after coming into the year just 11-for-23 in that category for his career. A 20-20 campaign is not out of reach for the 31-year-old, who is now slashing .251/.334/.451 with 58 extra-base hits, 71 RBI, 92 runs and a 61:145 BB:K in 595 plate appearances.
