Reed announced his retirement from professional baseball March 4, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports. A 2014 second-round pick of the Astros, Reed once looked to be Houston's potential long-term answer at first base after posting some eye-popping power production during his first three seasons in the minors. Reed was never able to translate that success over to the majors during his various trials with Houston between the 2016 and 2018 seasons, slashing a collective .153/.253/.244 while striking out in a third of his plate appearances. After being passed up by other ascending bats in the organization, Reed was waived by Houston last summer and claimed by the White Sox, but he posted a lowly .409 OPS in 14 games with Chicago before the team moved him off its 40-man roster. Rather than accepting a minor-league deal in an attempt to keep his downward-trending career going, the 26-year-old Reed decided it was a good time to step away from the game.

Reed was outrighted to Triple-A Charlotte on Friday, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports. The White Sox will clear a spot on the 40-man roster by outrighting Reed to Triple-A. A corresponding move has yet to be announced.

Reed was optioned to Triple-A Charlotte on Thursday, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports. This move comes after Reed went 0-for-4 with four strikeouts during Thursday's loss to the Mets, lowering his season average to an unsightly .136. The White Sox are expected to announce a corresponding roster move prior to Friday's series opener in Philadelphia.

Reed is not starting Tuesday against the Mets. Reed sits for the second time in three games, following a stretch in which he started five straight. He's hit just .158/.214/.237 in 12 games for the White Sox this season and may not have a particularly long leash given that he's never proven himself at the big-league level.

Reed will start at first base and bat sixth Sunday against the Twins. Reed will be filling in for a resting Jose Abreu in the series finale, but there should be room for both players in the lineup when the White Sox oppose right-handed pitching. The 26-year-old is making his sixth start in seven games and looks poised to share first base and designated-hitter duties with Abreu for the time being. Reed will need to improve on the .176/.237/.265 batting line he's provided through his first 11 games with the White Sox to stick in a full-time role over the final two months of the season, however.
