  The Royals signed Newman to a minor-league contract Friday with an invitation to spring training. Newman managed just a .202/.209/.272 slash line in 56 games for the Angels in 2025 before eventually being released. The 32-year-old does still have a steady, versatile glove, but it will be a bad sign for the Royals if he winds up playing a lot in 2026.

  Newman agreed to a minor-league contract Saturday with the Tigers and was assigned to Triple-A Toledo, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports. After being released by the Angels on Aug. 2, Newman has finally found a new home. The 31-year-old slashed .202/.209/.272 in 116 plate appearances in the majors this season.

  The Angels designated Newman for assignment Thursday, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports. The Angels moved Newman off the 40-man roster in order to create space for newly acquired Oswaldo Peraza, who was acquired from the Yankees on Thursday. Newman's season in 2025 has been the worst of his career as he is hitting just above .200 in 116 plate appearances.

  Newman went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run in Monday's win over the Rangers. The second baseman opened the scoring Monday with a rocket home run to left-center off ace Jacob deGrom in the third inning. It was Newman's second long ball of the season, coming exactly one month after his first on June 28. The veteran had struggled mightily in July, entering the game with a .217/.217/.217 slash line and just one RBI in 23 at-bats. Despite his season-long struggles, Newman has remained on the roster, largely due to injuries to Christian Moore (thumb), Chris Taylor (hand) and Yoan Moncada (hand).

  Newman went 2-for-4 with a three-run home run in Saturday's 8-2 win over the Nationals. Newman gave the Angels some separation with his long ball in the seventh inning. The reserve infielder has gotten a look at shortstop lately, though that is likely to be a short-term opportunity while Zach Neto (shoulder) is on the mend. The homer was Newman's first of the season to go with eight RBI, nine runs scored, one stolen base, two doubles and a .202/.212/.262 slash line across 86 plate appearances.
