Garabito was sent out to the minors Friday, but he will now return to the big club to replace Max Scherzer (hamstring), who was placed on the 15-day injured list. Garabito holds a 4.88 ERA through 24 innings in the majors this year, though he's allowed eight earned runs over his last 6.1 frames and will most likely be limited to low-leverage work until he bounces back.

Garabito was optioned to Triple-A on Saturday, but he'll be eligible to rejoin the Rangers one day later after Jose Urena (shoulder) was placed on the 15-day injured list in a corresponding move. The 29-year-old right-hander will join righty Jack Leiter as a multi-inning option out of the Texas bullpen.

The 29-year-old righty owns a 3.86 ERA and 1.14 WHIP through 21 innings in the big leagues this season, and he still has a chance to pitch for the Rangers down the stretch if Texas needs a fresh bullpen arm.

Garabito has made his last two appearances out of the bullpen, giving up two earned runs on one hit and one walk while retiring two batters via strikeout in outings Tuesday in Arizona and Thursday in Seattle. Since tossing 2.2 scoreless innings to lead off a bullpen game for the Rangers last Friday versus the Angels, Garabito has shifted back to a relief role. With Texas getting Jacob deGrom back from the 60-day injured list Friday and Max Scherzer (shoulder) due to return from the 15-day IL on Saturday, the Rangers aren't expected to have an opening in the rotation for Garabito for the remainder of the season.
