Herget will enter spring training as a starting pitcher, Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon of The Athletic report. Herget was a starting pitcher in college but has not made a traditional start in his entire professional career. He did, however, record more than three outs in 31 of his 59 appearances for the Rockies in 2025. Herget was excellent out of the Rockies' bullpen last season, posting a 2.48 ERA and 81:26 K:BB over 83.1 innings.

Rockies interim manager Warren Schaeffer said Sunday that Herget will see more opportunities late in games after closer Seth Halvorsen (elbow) was placed on the 15-day injured list, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports. Schaeffer tabbed Victor Vodnik and Juan Mejia as the main candidates to pick up saves while Halvorsen is out, but Herget will move up a rung in the bullpen pecking order and could serve as one of the Rockies' top setup men. The 31-year-old right-hander has covered 58.2 innings over his 39 appearances for Colorado this season, logging a 2.91 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 49:19 K:BB while collecting two holds.

The Rockies claimed Herget off waivers from the Cubs on Friday. Herget has now gone from Atlanta to Chicago to Colorado since September. The righty was one of the better relievers in the American League in 2022 with the Angels when he posted a 2.48 ERA and 0.91 WHIP while notching nine saves, but he has a 4.57 ERA and 1.38 WHIP over the last two seasons and has spent substantial time in the minors.

The Cubs designated Herget for assignment Monday, Maddie Lee of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. The move clears a spot on the 40-man roster for Rob Zastryzny, who was claimed off waivers. Herget himself was a waiver claim of the Cubs but never made an appearance for them.

The Cubs claimed Herget off waivers from Atlanta and optioned him to Triple-A Iowa on Friday, Maddie Lee of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. Herget made eight appearances for Atlanta and posted a 4.38 ERA and 1.30 WHIP across 12.1 major-league innings before being designated for assignment. After being scooped up by the Cubs, Herget will take over a spot on the organization's 40-man roster, but he'll head to the Triple-A level for now.
