The Twins optioned Henriquez to Triple-A St. Paul on Saturday. After coming up from the minors in mid-August, Henriquez turned in a 3.94 ERA and 1.38 WHIP across 16 innings. After pitching in three of Minnesota's last four games, he'll be sent out to the minors in favor of Brent Headrick, who will provide a fresh arm in middle relief.

Henriquez will serve as the Twins' opening pitcher for Wednesday's game against the Rays, Betsy Helfand of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports. Henriquez has been effective out of the bullpen for the Twins this season, going unscored upon in all but one of his nine appearances. He'll now be trusted with the first inning Wednesday, after which Louie Varland is expected to pitch in bulk relief.

The Twins recalled Henriquez from Triple-A St. Paul on Thursday. Henriquez appeared in six games for St. Paul since being optioned July 24, posting a 2.61 ERA, 1.45 WHIP and 13:4 K:BB across 10.1 innings. He hasn't allowed a run across three major-league outings this season, and he should fill a low-leverage relief role now that he's back with the Twins. Right-hander Louie Varland was optioned to St. Paul in a corresponding move.

Henriquez has had three separate brief stints in the majors this season, and in the most recent one, he retired the only batter he faced. He hasn't permitted a run in three outings with the Twins in 2024 but will head back to St. Paul for now.

He'll join Minnesota as a replacement in the bullpen for left-hander Kody Funderburk (oblique), who was placed on the 15-day injured list in a corresponding move. Henriquez had previously made two appearances for the big club this season, striking out three over three scoreless innings.
