  Vasquez was optioned to Triple-A El Paso on Sunday. Vasquez had arguably his best start of the season Saturday in Arizona, giving up one hit and one walk while striking out four over six scoreless innings. He'll presumably compete for a rotation spot next spring, but it's not clear if he'll have a role on the Padres' postseason roster. Matt Waldron was recalled in a corresponding move.

  Vasquez allowed one hit and one walk while striking out four over six shutout innings in a no-decision versus the Diamondbacks on Saturday. Vasquez didn't come away with a win since it took until the ninth inning for the Padres' offense to wake up. It was still an impressive outing for the right-hander, who was in the majors for the first time since Sept. 1. He concludes the regular season with a 4.87 ERA, 1.51 WHIP and 62:29 K:BB over 98 innings across 20 starts this season. Despite the strong outing, Vasquez is unlikely to make the Padres' wild-card roster, and he could be optioned out Sunday for a fresh bullpen arm.

• Padres' Randy Vasquez: Lit up for nine runs Saturday

  Vasquez (4-7) took the loss against the Rays on Saturday, allowing nine runs on 11 hits and four walks with three strikeouts over 4.1 innings. Vasquez was staked an early 2-0 lead but yielded a career-high nine earned runs despite allowing just one home run. Over his last 10 starts, the 25-year-old has allowed three earned runs or fewer eight times but also surrendered 15 total earned runs in two disastrous outings. On the season, he owns a 5.18 ERA, 1.59 WHIP and 58:28 K:BB across 92 innings and lines up to face the Giants at home next weekend.

• Padres' Randy Vasquez: Yields two runs

  Vasquez (4-6) allowed two runs on six hits and two walks over six innings Monday, striking out two and earning a win over St. Louis. Vasquez was called up to make his first MLB appearance since Aug. 8 and delivered a quality start. It was his first win since throwing six shutout frames against Washington on July 23. Vasquez has now made 18 starts with the Padres this season. He registered a 5.70 ERA through the first nine and a 3.40 ERA over his last nine. Vasquez will carry a 4.52 ERA into his next start, which is currently lined up to be in Tampa Bay.

• Padres' Randy Vasquez: Replacing Waldron in rotation

  The Padres will recall Vasquez from Triple-A El Paso to start Monday's game in St. Louis, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. After a two-week stint in the minors, the 25-year-old will rejoin the big-league rotation as a replacement for the struggling Matt Waldron, who was optioned to Triple-A on Thursday. Before his demotion, Vasquez had settled in nicely as a serviceable back-end rotation arm for San Diego, going 2-2 with a 3.46 ERA and 1.31 WHIP over his last eight starts spanning 39 innings. Many of Vasquez's advanced metrics (5.06 SIERA, 7.4 K-BB%) over that eight-start stretch were far less impressive, so fantasy managers should have some level of skepticism of him being able to maintain a sub-4.00 ERA in his subsequent outings with the Padres.
