  • Estes (7-8) took the loss Monday against the Cubs, allowing six runs on nine hits with one strikeout in one inning. Estes got out of the first inning only allowing one run, but he allowed six straight hits to start the second inning before being pulled. It was Estes' shortest outing of his career, and his ERA jumped to 4.78 after the ugly night. The 22-year-old had been having a strong second half of the season, pitching to a 3.29 ERA since the All-Star break. He'll look to bounce back in his next start against the Yankees later this week.

  • Estes (6-7) allowed four runs on six hits and struck out three without walking a batter over four innings, taking the loss Thursday versus the Mariners. Estes coughed up a pair of homers to Cal Raleigh and Julio Rodriguez, making it the fifth time this season he's allowed multiple long balls in a start. Estes has now given up at least one home run in seven straight starts, but he has pitched well over that span. Thursday's start ended an impressive run of nine straight outings in which he didn't allow more than three runs. The 22-year-old has a 4.46 ERA through 111 innings in his rookie campaign.

  • Estes came on in relief in Friday's 5-4 win over the Angels, collecting a hold while allowing two hits and two walks over 2.2 scoreless innings. He didn't strike out a batter. After making each of his previous 13 appearances with the Athletics this season as a starter, Estes worked out of the bullpen for the first time with Oakland bringing Paul Blackburn (foot) back from the injured list Friday. Since Blackburn was making his first start with the big club in more than two months, he was limited to five innings and 72 pitches in his return, prompting the Athletics to turn to Estes in relief on his normal four days' rest. The Athletics cleared up their logjam in the rotation to some degree by optioning Hogan Harris to Triple-A Las Vegas on Friday, but Estes could still end up sticking in the bullpen if Oakland elects to proceed with Osvaldo Bido as its fifth starter.

  • Estes (4-4) earned the win Sunday, allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits and a walk over six innings against the Phillies. He struck out five. Estes began his start in an early hole after he allowed a one-out homer by Trea Turner in the first. However, the A's provided 10 runs prior to Estes being removed from the game, ultimately tallying 18 runs to allow the young righty to cruise to his fourth win. It was a nice bounce-back effort for Estes, who had allowed eight runs over just 1.2 innings during his previous start, which had come on the heels of his first complete-game shutout. Estes enters the All-Star break with a 5.29 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 49 strikeouts over 12 starts spanning 63 innings.

  • Athletics' Joey Estes: Crushed in Boston
    By RotoWire

Estes (3-4) took the loss Tuesday, surrendering eight runs on seven hits and a walk over just 1.2 innings as the A's were downed 12-9 by the Red Sox. He struck out one. Every Boston starting position player has at least one hit and one run by the end of the second inning, chasing Estes from the game in the process after 55 pitches (38 strikes). It was a hard crash back down to earth after he twirled a shutout against the Angels in his last start, but Tuesday's outing is more representative of the 22-year-old right-hander's level right now. Estes will carry a 5.53 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 44:14 K:BB through 57 innings into his next start, which is scheduled to come on the road this weekend in Philadelphia.
