Castillo logged a 4.43 ERA over 20.1 innings at the big-league level with the Royals in 2023, but he didn't make any appearances for the Phillies in 2024 after being added to the organization's 40-man roster over the offseason. The right-hander was outrighted off the roster earlier this month and was eventually cut loose after compiling a 7.62 ERA over 52 innings this season between Triple-A Lehigh Valley and Double-A Reading.

The Phillies optioned Castillo to Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Tuesday, Scott Lauber of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports. A waiver claim last month, Castillo was roughed up this spring, yielding eight runs on 15 hits and three walks over 11 innings. He should be part of Lehigh Valley's rotation at the beginning of the season.

The Phillies claimed Castillo off waivers from the Red Sox on Wednesday, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports. It's the third organization Castillo has been in since early January, as he previously had gone from the Royals to the Red Sox via waivers. He'll compete for a swingman role in Philadelphia but does have an option year remaining.
