Santos got back on the bump at the major-league level for the first time since July 31 when he earned his second hold with a scoreless seventh inning in the series opener against the Athletics on Friday. He logged one more frame during Sunday's regular-season finale, getting through the eighth inning on just nine pitches. It was a modest but encouraging season-ending sample for Santos, who didn't make his 2024 debut until July due to a lat strain and then missed nearly two months with a biceps injury. The hard-throwing right-hander played on a one-year deal this season, and it remains to be seen if the Mariners will want to take another look considering Santos logged all of 7.1 innings across eight appearances due to the injuries.

The Mariners reinstated Santos (biceps) from the 15-day injured list Monday, Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reports. Santos had been on the injured list since Aug. 2 due to right biceps inflammation. He began his rehab assignment with Triple-A Tacoma in early September, and across six outings he allowed one run on two hits and seven walks while striking out six across 5.1 frames. Santos has joined the Mariners in Houston and will operate out of the bullpen as Seattle makes a final push for a wild-card spot. To make room on the big-league roster for Santos, left-hander Jhonathan Diaz was optioned to the minors.

Santos has now logged 5.1 innings across six appearances with the Rainiers, allowing just one run on two hits but also posting a crooked 6:7 K:BB. While the spotty control is somewhat of a concern, Santos' arm appears primed for a return to the big-league bullpen as the Mariners make a push for a wild-card spot during the final week of the regular season.

Santos made his second rehab appearance in three days for the Rainiers and bounced back from having allowed a run over two-thirds of an inning in Friday's outing. The right-hander threw another 18 pitches Sunday, although only seven landed for strikes. Santos has exhibited control issues in each of his last two appearances, but from a workload standpoint, he certainly seems to be ready for activation.

The right-hander threw 21 pitches overall in a laborious inning, but the silver lining to his control issues was the fact his arm got a good test. Santos has now made two appearances with the Rainiers of an inning apiece, and the Mariners may determine he only needs another turn or two before being deemed ready for activation.
