The Astros non-tendered Urias on Friday, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. The decision to non-tender Urias became expected after the Astros pushed him off the 40-man roster Tuesday. The 31-year-old infielder finished the 2025 campaign slashing .241/.292/.384 through 391 plate appearances between the Orioles and Astros, and his defense should be enough to net him another big-league contract in the offseason.

The Astros designated Urias for assignment Tuesday. The transaction frees up a spot on the 40-man roster for the addition of Miguel Ullola. Urias is projected to make more than $4 million in his final year of arbitration eligibility, which the Astros felt was too much. The 31-year-old is a career .257/.321/.403 hitter and capable defender at second and third base, so he shouldn't have difficult landing a major-league contract this winter, assuming he clears waivers and becomes a free agent.

Urias is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Rangers. Urias started five straight games from Aug. 31 to Sept. 4, but he finds himself on the bench Sunday for the third straight game while in the midst of a 5-for-28 (.179) slump. Mauricio Dubon is receiving the start at second base in the series finale for Houston.

Urias is not in the Astros' starting lineup against the Rangers on Friday, Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle reports. Urias has started in each of Houston's last four games, but he went 0-for-10 with one RBI and six strikeouts during the Astros' three-game home series against the Yankees. He'll be on the bench for the start of Friday's contest while Jose Altuve starts at the keystone and Yordan Alvarez serves as the designated hitter.

Urias will start at second base and bat eighth in Wednesday's game against the Yankees. Urias will pick up his fourth straight start at the keystone after going 3-for-10 with a home run, a double, a walk and two RBI over the previous three contests. With Jose Altuve seeing most of his playing time of late at designated hitter or in left field, Urias looks like he could be a stable part of the lineup at second base while he's swinging a hot bat. Urias could eventually face competition for reps at second from Mauricio Dubon, who has been playing more in center field of late but may become more of a factor in the infield once Jake Meyers (calf) returns from the injured list.
