Gil allowed one run on five hits and two walks while striking out five batters over five innings in a no-decision against Kansas City on Wednesday. Gil did well in the contest, but he needed 97 pitches to get through five innings and thus didn't last long enough to pick up a second straight quality start. The right-hander has looked good since returning from a stay on the 15-day injured list, allowing just one run while posting a 12:4 K:BB over 11 innings. That's great news for the Yankees as the postseason looms, as Gil has been one of the team's best starters this year with a 3.18 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 156:70 K:BB over 135.2 frames.

Gil (13-6) earned the win Friday over the Cubs, allowing one hit and two walks over six scoreless innings. He struck out seven. After missing two weeks with lower-back discomfort, Gil was excellent in his return. It's an encouraging effort from the 26-year-old, who had allowed seven runs over seven innings in two starts prior to his IL stint. He had also issued 16 walks in his previous 17.1 frames. Overall, Gil sports a 3.24 ERA across 130.2 innings this season with a 1.16 WHIP and 151:68 K:BB. He currently lines up for a home matchup with the Royals in his next outing.

The Yankees activated Gil (back) from the 15-day injured list Thursday, Jorge Castillo of ESPN.com reports. Gil will rejoin the rotation Friday with a start against the Cubs after missing the last two weeks with lower-back discomfort. He went just 3.2 innings but threw 80 pitches in his lone rehab start, so Gil is mostly stretched out. The Yankees could look to shift Gil to relief later in September and perhaps even use him as their closer, but for now, the right-hander will be part of what appears to be a six-man rotation.

With Clarke Schmidt (lat) making his return from the 60-day IL on Saturday, it appears the Yankees will employ a six-man rotation for the near future.

Gil made what's expected to be his lone rehab start with Double-A Somerset on Sunday, getting charged with three runs while striking out six over 3.2 frames. He threw 80 pitches in the outing, so the righty should be sufficiently stretched out for a typical workload versus the Cubs. Clarke Schmidt (lat) is also expected to return from the 60-day IL to make a start this weekend, so the Yankees appear poised to operate with a six-man setup for now. Eventually, one or both pitchers could be shifted to the bullpen ahead of the postseason.
