The Angels outrighted Hiura to Triple-A Salt Lake on Saturday. Hiura will remain within the Angels organization after being designated for assignment earlier this week and clearing waivers. Across his 19 games in Salt Lake this season, Hiura is slashing .360/.429/.853 with 12 home runs and 21 RBI across 84 plate appearances. That production hasn't translated to the majors, however, as the 27-year-old has gone just 4-for-27 with a 37 percent strikeout rate in 10 games this season.

The Angels designated Hiura for assignment Tuesday, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports. The return of Luis Rengifo (wrist) from the IL on Tuesday will leave Hiura without a spot on the active roster, and because he has no more options remaining, he will also lose his spot on the 40-man. The 27-year-old has slashed an incredible .360/.429/.853 through 85 plate appearances with Triple-A Salt Lake, though he managed just a .296 OPS in 10 games with the Angels.

Hiura will sit Saturday versus the Athletics, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports. Hiura will head to the bench after he went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts in Friday's series opener. Luis Guillorme will make his return to the lineup after a two-game absence with back tightness, starting at second base and batting ninth against Oakland.

The team is still awaiting the results of the MRI on Luis Rengifo's right wrist, and if it's bad enough to force an injured-list stint, Hiura is poised to be added to the roster. Hiura has slashed .270/.346/.536 with 18 home runs in 68 games at the Triple-A level this season split between the Tigers and Angels organizations. He has not appeared in a major-league game since 2022.
