Texas recalled Pennington from the Arizona Complex League Rangers on Saturday. Pennington takes the spot in the Rangers' bullpen vacated by right-hander Josh Sborz, who was placed on the 15-day injured list Saturday due to right shoulder fatigue. Pennington made his last appearance Sept. 21 against the Mariners, during which he allowed three runs on two hits while striking out two across two-thirds of an inning. Across 15 major-league outings with the Rangers this season (including one start), Pennington has a 3.12 ERA and 1.73 WHIP across 17.1 innings.

The Rangers optioned Pennington to Triple-A Round Rock on Tuesday. Pennington has been solid out of the bullpen since joining the Rangers in August, posting a 2.76 ERA and 1.59 WHIP through 16.1 frames. However, he gave up three earned runs in just two-thirds of an inning during his most recent appearance, which will ultimately cost him his spot on the active roster. Josh Sborz (shoulder) returned from the 15-day IL in a corresponding move to take Pennington's place.

The Rangers acquired Pennington from the Royals on Monday in exchange for right-hander Michael Lorenzen. Pennington, 26, has made one scoreless appearance in the majors this season and boasts a 2.26 ERA and 79:20 K:BB across 59.2 innings at the Triple-A level in 2024. The left-hander will be assigned to Triple-A Round Rock for now but could contribute to the Rangers bullpen in the second half.

The Royals returned Pennington to Triple-A Omaha following Wednesday's doubleheader against St. Louis. Pennington didn't pitch in either of Wednesday's games while serving as the Royals' 27th man. He's been a reliable option for Omaha, however, posting a 2.22 ERA and 0.96 WHIP alongside an 81:21 K:BB through 56.2 innings. Should Kansas City need to bring another fresh arm into its bullpen, the 26-year-old southpaw would be a likely candidate for promotion.

The Royals recalled Pennington from Triple-A Omaha to serve as their 27th man for the second game of Wednesday's doubleheader with the Cardinals. Pennington will give the Royals a fresh arm out of the bullpen for the nightcap before he likely heads back to Omaha on Thursday. The 26-year-old lefty previously made his big-league debut last week in Colorado, retiring both of the batters he faced.
