Atlanta and Suarez avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year contract Friday. Suarez made seven appearances (one start) with Atlanta in 2025, finishing with a 1.86 ERA and 16:10 K:BB across 19.1 innings of work. The left-hander holds a career 5.30 ERA over parts of seven major-league seasons and does not have minor-league options remaining, so he could open the 2026 campaign as a long reliever.

Suarez picked up the save Monday against Washington. He allowed five hits and no walks while striking out two over three scoreless innings. Suarez came in to handle the final three innings Monday, locking down his first save of the year. The southpaw hasn't logged a ton of big-league action, but he's been effective when used, working to a 1.96 ERA and 1.25 WHIP over 18.1 innings across six appearances (one start).

Suarez (2-0) picked up the win in the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Nationals, allowing two runs on five hits and two walks over seven innings. He struck out nine. The nine Ks were a career high for Suarez, who was making his first big-league start of the season and first MLB appearance since April 10. The 27-year-old southpaw missed over two months this summer in the minors with an undisclosed injury, but in four appearances with Triple-A Gwinnett after being activated from the 7-day IL in late August he posted a 2.70 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 23:6 K:BB over 20 innings, and he carried that momentum with him to the majors after his promotion. Suarez was originally brought up for a spot start in the twin bill, but after racking up a massive 21 swinging strikes on 99 pitches (65 total strikes) against the Nats, he may have earned one more turn through the rotation before the end of the season. Atlanta hasn't indicated whether its pitching plans will get shuffled to accommodate him, but with days off coming each of the last two Thursdays in September, the team has plenty of flexibility.

Atlanta selected Suarez's contract from Triple-A Gwinnett on Tuesday. Suarez will make a spot start Tuesday in the first game of a doubleheader against the Nationals. The left-hander has pitched well lately at Gwinnett, posting a 2.70 ERA and 23:6 K:BB over 20 innings covering his last four starts. Suarez could be sent back down to Gwinnett after Tuesday's start.

Suarez will have his contract selected from Double-A Columbus to start Game 1 of Tuesday's doubleheader against Washington, Barrett Sallee of 680 The Fan reports. Tuesday will mark Suarez's first big-league start since the 2024 campaign, which he spent with the Angels. He made three relief appearances for Atlanta earlier this year, surrendering two runs on three hits and seven walks while striking out five over 7.1 innings. Suarez last worked five innings Wednesday against Triple-A Nashville, so he should be stretched out to make a traditional start in Game 1.
