He has hit .286 with four RBI and two runs scored in that span, which could be enough to maintain a playing time advantage over Hunter Feduccia for the final week of the regular season.

Hunter Feduccia got the start at catcher for Tampa Bay, but Fortes pinch hit for him in the seventh inning and got on base with a double. Fortes then stepped up in a huge way in the ninth, mashing a 421-foot solo shot to provide what ended up being the game-winning run. Fortes has five homers through 209 plate appearances this season, so he's not typically looked to for power.

Fortes hit just .139 (5-for-36) with four RBI over 16 games in August, so he's already off to a better start in September. The catcher's long ball opened the scoring in the second inning, leading the charge in the Rays' romp to the win. For the season, he's at a .218/.286/.333 slash line with four homers, 17 RBI, 17 runs scored and one stolen base across 194 plate appearances. Hunter Feduccia has seen a slight edge for playing time lately, but he hasn't hit well enough to relegate Fortes completely to a backup role.

Fortes will start at catcher and bat ninth in Wednesday's game against the Angels, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. Though he'll crack the starting nine for the series finale, Fortes looks poised to work in a timeshare behind the dish with Hunter Feduccia, after the latter was acquired from the Dodgers on Thursday. Feduccia had started in three of the previous four contests and may hold a slight edge over Fortes in terms of playing time at the moment.
