  • Twins' Joe Ryan: Falls to Cleveland
    By RotoWire

Ryan (6-10) took the loss Sunday against the Guardians, allowing four runs on seven hits and a walk across four innings. He struck out one. It was a tough outing for Ryan, who's now dropped five straight starts (bisected by a month-long stint on the IL). Ryan threw 84 pitches Sunday, giving up a pair of solo homers to Steven Kwan and Jo Adell before the Guardians added two more runs in the fourth. Ryan's ERA now sits at 3.84 through 25 starts (133.2 innings) this season with a 1.16 WHIP and 146:29 K:BB. Ryan is tentatively in line to face the Angels at home his next time out.

  • Twins' Joe Ryan: Fans seven in return
    By RotoWire

Ryan (6-9) took the loss against Detroit on Monday, allowing three runs (two earned) on three hits and one walk while striking out seven batters over four innings. It was an uneven outing for Ryan in his return from a stint on the injured list that lasted over a month. The Tigers scored four runs against the veteran righty over the first two innings, but he managed to rebound and retired the final eight batters he faced. Ryan also flashed good swing-and-miss stuff with 12 whiffs among 66 pitches and seven punchouts. His pitch count was logically limited following the lengthy absence, but that should push up over his remaining starts. Ryan is next lined up to take the mound at home versus Cleveland.

  • Manager Derek Shelton said that Ryan (glute) checked out fine after completing a bullpen session Saturday and is likely to return from the 15-day injured list to make his next start with the Twins, Audra Martin of Twins.tv reports. On the shelf since Aug. 7 due to a mild left glute strain, Ryan looks on track to slot back into the Minnesota rotation during the club's three-game series in Detroit that begins Monday. Since he covered just three innings and tossed 42 pitches in his lone rehab start Triple-A St. Paul this past Tuesday, Ryan will likely be operating with a restricted pitch count if he does in fact get activated during the upcoming week. The Twins could consider using Ryan in tandem with rookie Connor Prielipp, whose workload is expected to be monitored over the final few weeks of the season.

  • The Twins placed Ryan on the 15-day injured list Friday with a left glute strain. Imaging revealed the injury Thursday, and it's unclear at this point if Ryan will need to miss more than the minimum 15 days. With Ryan off to the injured list, Zebby Matthews has been summoned back from Triple-A St. Paul and will start Friday's game against the Brewers. Ryan owns a 3.65 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 138:27 K:BB across 125.2 innings spanning 23 starts this season.

  • MRI results revealed a strain in Ryan's left glute Thursday, Dan Hayes of The Athletic reports. Manager Derek Shelton said Wednesday that Ryan's injury has prevented him from replicating his delivery, and the right-hander is likely to spend time on the injured list now that he's been officially diagnosed with a strain. It's unclear whether he'll need to miss more than the 15-day minimum, but the Twins may provide a return timeline once he officially lands on the IL.
