  • The Cardinals are in agreement with Wetherholt on a long-term contract extension, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports. Per Jon Heyman of the New York Post, the deal is worth eight years and $112.5 million and could max out at $132 million if all escalators are reached. Wetherholt is the likely National League Rookie of the Year front-runner, sporting a .267/.362/.411 batting line with 13 home runs, nine stolen bases and a 38:61 BB:K over 87 contests. The 23-year-old is also leading all second basemen in outs above average at plus-16.

  • Wetherholt is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Brewers. Wetherholt had started in every game since June 14 and played 17 innings between both ends of Tuesday's doubleheader, so the standout rookie is likely just receiving a breather Wednesday. Jose Fermin will check in at the keystone in place of Wetherholt, who is slashing .281/.361/.406 with one home run, seven runs and two RBI through his first eight games of July.

  • Wetherholt went 3-for-5 with two home runs, three RBI, three runs scored and a hit-by-pitch in Sunday's 12-10 win over the Royals. Wetherholt wasted no time making an impact Sunday, taking the third pitch of the game from Stephen Kolek over the fence for a leadoff homer. He wasn't finished there, adding another long ball against Kolek in the second inning as part of a massive offensive outburst by St. Louis. The performance marked the second multi-homer game of his young career and pushed his season total to 12 home runs. The rookie has been swinging a hot bat throughout June, hitting .333 over 15 games while continuing to provide production across multiple categories. On the season, Wetherholt is slashing .268/.370/.428 with eight doubles, 12 homers, 34 RBI, 49 runs scored and eight stolen bases across 71 games.
