Mariners' Evan White: Out with groin strain

White will be sidelined for one week with a groin strain, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports.

It's unclear when White picked up the injury, but the Mariners will play it safe with their top prospect. Once healthy, the 21-year-old is expected to report to a full-season league for the first time in his professional career.

Astros' Yulieski Gurriel: Disabled list stint still possible

Gurriel's (hand) batting practice session went well Monday, but a stint on the disabled list is still possible, Jake Kaplan of The Athletic Houston reports.

Reports in recent days suggested that Gurriel was unlikely to go to the disabled list following his reinstatement from his suspension Tuesday. Manager A.J. Hinch said that there hasn't been any setback, but didn't rule out a DL stint. "It's just a tedious process to make sure that he's capable of handling major league pitching and the workload that comes with it," Hinch said. It's a tough situation to get a read on, but an announcement should be made prior to Tuesday night's game against the Orioles.

  • Tommy Joseph 1B | TEX

Rangers' Tommy Joseph: Outrighted to Double-A

Joseph accepted an outright assignment to Double-A Frisco on Monday.

Joseph hasn't been down at the Double-A level since 2014. He spent the last two years in the big leagues with the Phillies, showing decent power (43 home runs in 249 games) but not enough on-base ability (.297 on-base percentage) to stick around at the big-league level. He's been designated for assignment by both the Phillies and the Rangers this spring and was not claimed by another team. He could eventually return to the big leagues as a bench bat but currently doesn't hold a 40-man roster spot, so he's unlikely to be one of the first names called upon in the event of an injury.

Astros' Yulieski Gurriel: Trending toward return Tuesday

Astros manager A.J. Hinch reiterated Sunday that he expects Gurriel (hand) to be available Tuesday against the Orioles, when his five-game suspension will have lapsed, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.

Gurriel is slated to face live batting practice in Florida on Monday in what likely amounts to the final test for him to prove his left hand -- for which he required surgery in February -- is no longer a concern. Once Gurriel is reinstated, it's expected that J.D. Davis will be assigned to Triple-A Round Rock, clearing the way for Marwin Gonzalez to return to a utility role while opening up first base primarily for Gurriel. The 33-year-old isn't expected to face any restrictions once he's cleared to play, though it may be prudent for fantasy owners to see how he performs during the upcoming week rather than activating him right away.

  • C.J. Cron 1B | BOS

Rays' C.J. Cron: Benched for second straight game

Cron is out of the lineup Sunday against the Red Sox, Roger Mooney of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

Cron will ride the pine for back-to-back games against opposing right-handers, suggesting that he may be the soft side of a platoon at first base with Brad Miller. With a 1-for-7 showing at the plate through three games, Miller hasn't exactly established himself as a lineup mainstay yet, so it isn't out of the question that Cron eventually emerges as the primary option at the position.

  • Yuli Gurriel DH | SD

Astros' Yulieski Gurriel: Will likely return Tuesday

Gurriel (hand) will likely return to action when first eligible Tuesday, Jake Kaplan of The Athletic Houston reports. "All signs are pointing in a great direction for him," manager A.J. Hinch said.

Gurriel remains ahead of schedule in his return from February hand surgery. The 33-year-old was able to avoid a stint on the disabled list to open the season, and he could be cleared to make his season debut Tuesday -- which is the first day he's eligible to return from his five-game suspension -- if everything goes well in a set of minor-league games he's scheduled to appear in over the next few days. Once active, Gurriel will serve as the team's primary first baseman.

  • Tommy Joseph 1B | TEX

Rangers' Tommy Joseph: Weighs options after clearing waivers

Joseph cleared waivers Friday and is currently considering whether to remain in the Rangers organization, Stefan Stevenson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports.

Joseph was designated for assignment Thursday and was previously optioned to Double-A Frisco. The 26-year-old has the ability to elect free agency after being outrighted twice in the past month and could garner some interest with a .247/.297/.757 slash line and 43 home runs in 810 at-bats for the Phillies over the past two seasons.

  • C.J. Cron 1B | BOS

Rays' C.J. Cron: Not in Saturday lineup

Cron is out of the lineup against the Red Sox on Saturday.

With right-hander Rick Porcello taking the mound, Cron will retreat in favor of Brad Miller at first base. He could be back on the bench again for Sunday's series finale with another right-hander (Hector Velazquez) set to pitch.

  • Matt Olson 1B | ATL

Athletics' Matt Olson: Goes deep in Opening Day win

Olson went 1-for-5 with a solo home run in Thursday's 6-5 extra-inning Opening Day win over the Angels.

The 383-foot shot to right in the fifth inning knotted the game at 4-4 and was the unquestioned highlight of Olson's afternoon, as he went down on strikes in three of his other four at-bats. The whiffs were a recurring theme during the spring (18 strikeouts in 64 plate appearances) and in 2017 (27.8 percent strikeout rate over 216 plate appearances), as well, so it's an inauspicious start for the Athletics' everyday first baseman in that regard. However, prodigious power helps cover a lot of blemishes, and the fact Olson wasted no time in notching his first round tripper could be an early sign he's ready to build handsomely on his torrid 24-homer outburst from last season.

  • Kole Calhoun 1B | CLE

Angels' Kole Calhoun: Flashes power early

Calhoun went 3-for-5 with a triple, a home run and a trio of runs scored in Thursday's Opening Day loss to the Athletics.

Calhoun got the offense going early Thursday, tripling in his first at-bat and following that up with his first homer of the 2018 campaign. The Angels lowered their right field fence this offseason, and we got a taste of the benefit that change could have for the club's only everyday left-handed batter. The 30-year-old should be a decent source of HR and RBI batting fifth or sixth in the Halos' improved offense.
