Angels' C.J. Cron: Ropes pair of hits Thursday

Cron went 2-for-3 with an RBI double in Thursday's 2-1 win over the Athletics.

Cron logged his first multi-hit game since April 9 and drove in the second and final run of the night for the Angels in the first with a two-bagger that plated Albert Pujols. The 27-year-old has struggled to make hard contact thus far this season, with a pair of doubles as the only extra-base hits he's amassed over 61 plate appearances after he set career highs in doubles (25) and triples (2) while equaling a personal best with 16 homers in 2016. Cron has split time with Jefry Marte at first base, although the latter's struggles (.163/.234/.279 over 47 plate appearances) run even deeper than Cron's.

  • Matt Olson 1B | ATL

Athletics' Matt Olson: Sent back to minors

Olson was optioned to Triple-A Nashville on Thursday.

Olson made just one appearance with the Athletics before being sent back to Nashville, going 0-for-3 with two strikeouts while playing the entire game in left field. He's now just a combined 2-for-25 in his two major-league stints. He'll head back to Triple-A for some more seasoning, though he could earn another promotion should an opportunity in the majors arise.

  • Kole Calhoun 1B | CLE

Angels' Kole Calhoun: Ropes trio of hits Wednesday

Calhoun went 3-for-5 with an RBI single in Wednesday's 8-5 win over the Athletics.

Much like new teammate Cameron Maybin, Calhoun has thus far been unable to follow up a solid 2016 campaign with a successful encore, as Wednesday's production still leaves his line at .238/.326/.310 over his first 93 plate appearances. However, there are signs the veteran outfielder may be breaking out of his slumber, as he's now hit safely in three straight and six of his last seven, while reaching safely in seven straight overall. Calhoun's three-hit night also marked his first multi-hit effort since April 12 versus the Rangers.

  • Jose Abreu 1B | HOU

White Sox's Jose Abreu: Plans to return Friday

Abreu said he plans to return to action Friday against the Tigers, Bruce Levine of 670 The Score reports.

Abreu left Wednesday's game against the Royals with a mild right hip flexor strain, though he said the pain he was experiencing was in his upper groin area. He'll be re-evaluated after Thursday's off day, but the plan -- at least in his eyes -- is to return to the lineup in time for the weekend series against Detroit. He's batting just .253 with eight RBI in 75 at-bats this year. If the White Sox decide play it safe with him and hold him out Friday, Todd Frazier should slide over to first while Tyler Saladino or Matt Davidson move over to third.

  • Jose Abreu 1B | HOU

White Sox's Jose Abreu: Day-to-day with hip injury

Abreu left Wednesday's game with a mild right hip flexor strain and is day-to-day.

He will be re-evaluated in Detroit prior to the start of this weekend's series with the Tigers, and hopefully Thursday's off day allows Abreu's condition to improve. The injury was suffered when Abreu did the splits while awkwardly attempting to field a ground ball. Todd Frazier, who moved over to first base after Abreu left, would be an obvious candidate to get starts there while Tyler Saladino or Matt Davidson moves to third base if Abreu has to miss time with the injury.

  • Jose Abreu 1B | HOU

White Sox's Jose Abreu: Leaves Wednesday with lower-body injury

Abreu left Wednesday's game in the top of the fifth inning after doing the splits while trying to field a grounder at first base, MLB.com's Scott Merkin reports.

His left leg stretched awkwardly on the play, and the White Sox labeled Abreu's injury as a lower-body issue. Todd Frazier moved to first base. with Tyler Saladino shifting over to third base and Yolmer Sanchez coming in to play second. Expect the White Sox to relay an update on Abreu's condition after the game.

  • C.J. Cron 1B | BOS

Angels' C.J. Cron: Sitting again Tuesday

Cron remains out of the lineup Tuesday against the A's, Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register reports.

Jefry Marte got the nod Monday against lefty Francisco Liriano, and despite an 0-for-3 showing Monday, Marte will remain at first base against right-hander Jesse Hahn. Cron seems to be in the doghouse after batting just .208/.259/.226 in his first 59 plate appearances of 2017. It's uncertain where exactly Cron will fit upon Luis Valbuena's return from a hamstring injury.

  • Yandy Diaz 1B | TB

Indians' Yandy Diaz: Working on swing at Triple-A

The Indians want Diaz to work on improving his pitch selection while he works in Triple-A Columbus, MLB.com's Jordan Bastian reports.

Diaz made the Opening Day roster in large part because a slew of injuries created a spot for the third baseman. Now back in the minors, the prospect has been tasked with specific objectives -- improve his pitch selection and learn when to attack inside pitches. "It's just he catches the ball very deep and he has the ability to accelerate to the ball very deep, which allows for low-trajectory, high-velocity balls off the bat," Tribe hitting coach Ty Van Burkleo said. "If there's one thing to work on with him, it's just balls in, catching them out front."

  • C.J. Cron 1B | BOS

Angels' C.J. Cron: Takes seat Monday

Cron is not in the lineup Monday against the Blue Jays.

Cron will head to the bench in favor of Jefry Marte as southpaw Francisco Liriano heads to the mound for the Blue Jays. Despite ostensibly being first on the depth chart, Cron has found himself part of a platoon with Marte, so it will be interesting to see how his playing time is affected once Luis Valbuena (hamstring) returns from the DL.

  • Yuli Gurriel DH | SD

Astros' Yulieski Gurriel: Goes 3-for-5 against Rays

Gurriel went 3-for-5 with a run and an RBI during Sunday's win over Tampa Bay.

After going 0-for-4 Saturday, Gurriel was back to work for his fantasy owners Sunday. He's sporting an active 15-for-32 stretch at the plate with five runs, three doubles, a home run and five RBI over his past nine games. While he's probably never going to turn heads with his power, Gurriel has the potential to be a solid contributor in the runs, RBI and batting average columns.
