Phillies' Rhys Hoskins: Won't return before Thursday

Manager Joe Girardi said Tuesday that Hoskins (groin) will remain on the 10-day injured list through Wednesday, Jody Jackson of Bally Sports Arizona reports.

Hoskins has been targeting a return at some point during the series in Arizona, but based on Girardi's update, he won't be activated until the final game in the desert at the earliest. Brad Miller is set to fill his void at first base again Tuesday and that is likely to be the case until Hoskins is reinstated.

Brewers' Keston Hiura: Activated at Triple-A level

Hiura was activated from the COVID-19 list at Triple-A Nashville on Tuesday.

It's been a frustrating year for Hiura, but he's at least now through his two-week COVID-related absence. There doesn't appear to be a role available for him at the major-league level at the moment, but he'll at least now be able to get back into game action in the minors.

  • Joey Votto 1B | TOR

Reds' Joey Votto: Achieves career milestone

Votto went 3-for-4 with a walk, an RBI and a run Monday in the Reds' 14-5 win over the Cubs.

After concluding the weekend series in Philadelphia with a pair of hitless games, Votto resumed his second-half surge in the Reds' blowout win in the series opener versus Chicago. Votto's second base knock of the night in the bottom of the seventh -- and his first of two singles in the Reds' eight-run inning -- went down as the 2,000th hit of his career and allowed him to join Hall of Famer Johnny Bench as the only players in franchise history with 2,000 hits and 300 home runs in Cincinnati uniforms. The 37-year-old has enjoyed a remarkable renaissance since the All-Star break; he leads the majors with 15 second-half home runs and is batting .339 over the past month.

Cron went 2-for-3 with a solo home run and a walk in Monday's 6-5 win over San Diego.

Since the start of August, the 31-year-old slugger has gone 18-for-45 (.400) with 21 RBI and just eight strikeouts. Cron is slashing .263/.373/.508 through 100 games this season.

  • Diamondbacks' Christian Walker: Expected to start Tuesday

Arizona manager Torey Lovullo said Walker got "a little bit of a blow" when he was held out of the starting lineup for two games over the weekend, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports. The manager expects Walker to start Tuesday against the Phillies.

Walker was held out of games Saturday and Sunday while Asdrubal Cabrera filled in at first base. With the team off Monday, Walker will get three days of rest before attempting to jumpstart his bat, which has produced a .636 OPS from first base, ranking him last among the 29 first basemen with at least 300 plate appearances.

  • Matt Beaty 1B | KC

Dodgers' Matt Beaty: Slams fifth home run Sunday

Beaty went 1-for-1 with a two-run home run in Sunday's 14-4 win over the Mets.

Beaty replaced Max Muncy in the eighth inning and blasted a two-run homer in the ninth inning off Brandon Drury. It was his first long ball since July 4. He has lost playing time due to players returning from injury and mostly picks up the occasional pinch-hit appearance. • Padres' Jake Cronenworth: Blasts 17th home run

In addition, he walked twice, including a bases-loaded walk in the eighth inning that scored Wil Myers. The 27-year-old Cronenworth is slashing .275/.348/.479 with 17 long balls, 58 RBI, 77 runs and four steals in 492 plate appearances.

  • Cardinals' Paul Goldschmidt: Doubles, steals base

Goldschmidt went 2-for-5 with a double, one RBI, two runs scored and a steal in Sunday's 7-2 win over the Royals.

Goldschmidt was busy in the first inning, knocking a single, stealing third and eventually crossing home in the three-run opening frame. He then ripped an RBI double and scored again in the second. The 6-foot-3 slugger has been on fire in August, going 16-for-50 (.320) with 13 RBI and three steals in 13 games. Goldschmidt's season OPS is up to .789 with 39 extra-base hits, and he has gone 9-for-9 in stolen base attempts.

  • Braves' Freddie Freeman: Blasts 25th home run

Freeman went 2-for-5 with a solo home run and a strikeout in Sunday's 6-5 win over the Nationals.

Freeman had gone just 1-for-18 with three strikeouts in the six games leading up to Saturday's matchup, but he went 4-for-8 with a homer, three runs, two RBI, a stolen base and two walks in the final two contests of the series against Washington. The 31-year-old's home run in the fifth inning was just his second extra-base hit in his last 21 games.
