  • P.J. Higgins 1B | CIN

Cubs' P.J. Higgins: Contract selected by Cubs

Higgins' contract was selected by the Cubs on Wednesday, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports.

Higgins began the 2021 campaign with Triple-A Iowa and slashed .333/.458/.513 with a home run, seven runs and six RBI in 11 games. He'll now serve as the backup to Willson Contreras after Tony Wolters was designated for assignment in a corresponding move.

  • Giants' Wilmer Flores: Placed on injured list

Flores was placed on the 10-day injured list with a right hamstring strain Wednesday, Kerry Crowley of The San Jose Mercury News reports.

Flores suffered a hamstring injury while running the bases in Tuesday's game against the Reds. Though Flores was sent in for an MRI, the Giants don't believe he'll be due for an extended absence, as manager Gabe Kapler told Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle that the 29-year-old was diagnosed with a minor strain. Donovan Solano (calf) was reinstated from the injured list in a corresponding move, and he should take over as the Giants' primary second baseman while both Flores and Tommy La Stella (hamstring) are on the IL.

  • Donovan Solano 1B | TEX

Giants' Donovan Solano: Reinstated from injured list

Solano (calf) was reinstated from the 10-day injured list Wednesday, Kerry Crowley of The San Jose Mercury News reports.

Solano missed nearly a month due to a right calf strain and had joined Triple-A Sacramento for a brief rehab assignment recently. However, he'll now rejoin the major-league club after Wilmer Flores (hamstring) was placed on the 10-day injured list in a corresponding move. While both Flores and Tommy La Stella (hamstring) are on the IL, Solano should have a clear path to an everyday role at second base.

  • Anthony Rizzo 1B | NYY

Cubs' Anthony Rizzo: Not starting Wednesday

Rizzo (back) isn't starting Wednesday's game against the Nationals.

Rizzo was removed from Tuesday's win over Washington as a precautionary measure due to tightness in his lower back. He's currently considered day-to-day but could be available off the bench if needed Wednesday, Jesse Rogers of ESPN.com reports. Kris Bryant will take over at first base while David Bote starts at the hot corner.

  • Keston Hiura 2B | LAD

Brewers' Keston Hiura: Stacking up doubles at Triple-A

Hiura is 7-for-20 (.350) with five doubles, two RBI, a steal and a 2:8 BB:K through five games with Triple-A Nashville.

Hiura got some time to tend to personal matters after being sent down by the Brewers early this month, but he joined the team's Triple-A affiliate last week and has been playing regularly since. He is stacking up doubles and hitting far better than he did at the big-league level, but he is still striking out quite a bit, and the Brewers are likely hoping to see some improvement in that area before bringing him back to the big-league club.

  • Braves' Freddie Freeman: Goes deep once again

Freeman went 1-for-3 with a home run and a walk in Tuesday's loss against the Mets.

Freeman crushed his third homer over his last four games and has hit safely in five of his last six contests, but he's been struggling a bit at the plate. The star first baseman is hitting just .193 this month but has hit five homers in that span.

  • Padres' Jake Cronenworth: Remains hot at dish

Cronenworth went 3-for-4 with two doubles Tuesday in a victory over the Rockies.

Cronenworth slugged his ninth and 10th doubles of the campaign in the contest, and he leads the team in two-baggers on the season. The 27-year-old has swung a hot bat in May, logging at least one hit in all but two of his 16 contests and slashing .377/.433/.492 with 11 runs and six RBI.

  • C.J. Cron 1B | BOS

Rockies' C.J. Cron: Tallies three hits in return

Cron went 3-for-4 with a double and a run in Tuesday's loss to San Diego.

Cron returned to the lineup after a 12-day absence caused by a back injury. He picked up where he left off prior to his trip to the injured list, notching his fourth multi-hit game over his past seven contests. After a slow start to the campaign, Cron has pushed his slash line up to a standout .309/.407/.515 on the season. He has five home runs and 15 RBI along with 18 runs scored.

  • Giants' Wilmer Flores: Heading for MRI

Flores (hamstring) will undergo an MRI after leaving Tuesday's win over the Reds, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports.

The 29-year-old suffered the injury while running the bases and received an initial diagnosis of a right hamstring strain. Flores will be reevaluated Wednesday, when it could be decided whether a trip to the injured list is necessary.

  • Donovan Solano 1B | TEX

Giants' Donovan Solano: Set to return Wednesday

Solano (calf) is expected to be activated from the 10-day injured list Wednesday, Kerry Crowley of The San Jose Mercury News reports.

The 33-year-old has been sidelined since April 21 by a right calf strain, but he's ready to rejoin the active roster after a brief rehab assignment with Triple-A Sacramento. Solano had a .300/.333/.380 slash line with four doubles, three RBI and five runs in 17 games prior to the injury.
