Red Sox manager Alex Cora is targeting a weekend return for Chavis (shoulder/side), Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports.

Chavis appeared to be getting over a shoulder injury when he experienced discomfort in his side over the weekend. "We're trying to shoot for the weekend," Cora said. "I think he feels better. I talked to (head trainer) Brad (Pearson) a little bit. It's a shame because he was swinging the bat well. He made some adjustments and he was feeling a lot better with his shoulder. But this happened. But hopefully the next few days he'll start hitting soft toss and hitting off the tee. Start his progression. By the end of the week, the goal is for him to be OK." The 24-year-old Chavis is batting just .221 since the All-Star break.

Chavis (shoulder/side) returned from his rehab assignment Tuesday but remains on the injured list, Chris Mason of The Salem News reports.

Chavis had been rehabbing with Triple-A Pawtucket but was scratched Friday and sent for further evaluation. It remains unclear when he's expected to return, but he's evidently not ready to go just yet.

Altuve will sit Tuesday against Milwaukee, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.

Altuve is riding a 10-game hitting streak, posting a .333/.340/.600 line over that stretch. Aledmys Diaz will start at second base in his absence.

Castro is not in the lineup Tuesday against the Royals.

Castro has hit for a respectable .286 batting average over his last 17 games but has done very little else, posting a .646 OPS over that stretch. Victor Reyes starts in center field Tuesday.

Torres is not in the lineup Tuesday against Texas.

Torres has hit .300/.345/.560 with four homers over his last 13 games. The Yankees are likely to give a decent amount of rest to their regulars down the stretch with the division crown all but locked up. Tyler Wade will start at second base.

Mendick's contract was selected by the White Sox on Tuesday.

The 25-year-old spent the season with Triple-A Charlotte, hitting a solid .279/.368/.444. He's considered a fringe prospect, with no standout tools, though he could get a fair amount of at-bats down the stretch in an audition for next season.

Lopez is not starting Tuesday against the Tigers.

Lopez has gone hitless in three straight games, immediately following a stretch in which he recorded a hit in 12 straight games. Humberto Arteaga starts at second base in his absence.

Arraez went 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored Monday against the Tigers.

Arraez registered his 13th double of the season in a 4-3 win, and he also reached base three times. The 22-year-old continues to see the ball well in his rookie season, slashing .340/.404/.440 with three homers and 22 RBI over 70 games.

Forsythe is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Yankees.

He'll head to the bench after starting four of the past five games, clearing the way for Ronald Guzman and Danny Santana to handle the two corner-infield spots. With Guzman back as a September callup and rookie Nick Solak also making a case for regular work in the Texas infield, Forsythe could see his role downsized during the season's final month.

Drury will start in left field and bat eighth Sunday against the Astros, Mike Wilner of Sportsnet 590 The Fan reports.

Drury will pick up his fourth straight start and fifth in six games, this time replacing a banged-up Derek Fisher (undisclosed) in left field. Though the 27-year-old doesn't have a direct path to an everyday role at any position, his ability to play all over the diamond in addition to both corner outfield spots should help Drury earn at least a handful of starts per week during the season's final month.
