  • Braves' Whit Merrifield: Absent from Wednesday's lineup

Merrifield (head) is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Rockies.

The 35-year-old cleared the concussion protocol after being hit in the back of the head by a pitch Tuesday, but he'll still be held out of the lineup for at least one game. According to David O'Brien of The Athletic, Merrifield had a CT scan come back clean and could be back in the starting nine for Thursday's series finale.

  • Nick Gonzales 2B | PIT

Pirates' Nick Gonzales: Swipes bag Tuesday

Gonzales went 2-for-4 with a stolen base and a run scored in Tuesday's 5-0 win over the Cubs.

Gonzales collected his fourth multi-hit effort over his last seven games since he returned from a groin injury. In that span, he's gone 11-for-32 (.344) with three doubles, two RBI and five runs scored. The infielder has a decent .268/.299/.393 slash line with five home runs, four steals, 41 RBI and 33 runs over 299 plate appearances this season. He's been the primary second baseman, when healthy, since his call-up in May.

  • Jared Triolo 3B | PIT

Pirates' Jared Triolo: Provides insurance with homer

Triolo went 1-for-4 with a three-run home run in Tuesday's 5-0 win over the Cubs.

Triolo's homer came in the seventh inning, giving the Pirates some extra breathing room. The infielder has gone 12-for-49 (.245) over his last 16 games, though he has hit three of his seven homers in that span. He's added a .206/.294/.305 slash line with 38 RBI, 33 runs scored and seven stolen bases over 367 plate appearances. With Ke'Bryan Hayes out indefinitely, Triolo has seen a majority of the playing time at third base over the last couple of weeks.

  • Braves' Whit Merrifield: Clears concussion protocol

Merrifield cleared concussion protocol after being hit in the back of the head by a pitch during Tuesday's game against Colorado, Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports.

Merrifield will also undergo a CT scan just to be safe, per Bowman, but there is a chance that the 35-year-old second baseman starts Wednesday's contest. Otherwise, the keystone would likely be occupied by Luke Williams.

  • Braves' Whit Merrifield: Hit in head, exits game

Merrifield was removed from Tuesday's game against the Rockies after getting hit in the head by a pitch, David O'Brien of The Athletic reports.

Merrifield took a 94-mph fastball off the back of his helmet during the seventh inning of Tuesday's contest. The fact he was able to walk off the field under his own power is a good sign, but Atlanta's medical staff will likely evaluate him for a potential concussion. Luke Williams entered as Merrifield's replacement and could be in line for a start at second base if the 35-year-old needs to miss some time.

  • Gavin Lux SS | TB

Dodgers' Gavin Lux: Sitting against lefty

Lux isn't in the Dodgers' lineup for Tuesday's game against the Angels.

The Dodgers will be facing left-hander Reid Detmers on Tuesday, so the left-handed bat of Lux will begin the game on the bench while Chris Taylor covers second base.

  • Giants' Casey Schmitt: Sent to minors

The Giants optioned Schmitt to Triple-A Sacramento on Tuesday.

Schmitt owns a .553 OPS across 38 plate appearances since the start of August and has seen his playing time diminish over the past several weeks. He'll now head back to Sacramento to receive regular reps while Marco Luciano comes up from Triple-A to take Schmitt's place as infield depth.

  • Ozzie Albies 2B | ATL

Braves' Ozzie Albies: Not cleared to hit yet

Albies (wrist) is no longer wearing a brace and took fielding practice Tuesday, Grant McAuley of 92.9 The Game Atlanta reports.

Albies is doing some swinging in the cage but has not been cleared to hit yet. Sunday will be the six-week mark of his projected 6-to-8 week absence with a left wrist fracture, and things are trending to a return toward the back end of that timetable.

  • Pirates' Isiah Kiner-Falefa: Out of Pittsburgh lineup

Kiner-Falefa is absent from the lineup for Monday's game versus the Cubs.

Alika Williams will start at shortstop and bat ninth, while Nick Gonzales will be elevated to the leadoff spot. Kiner-Falefa is slashing only .223/.263/.321 since joining the Pirates, but this is his first day off since he arrived in Pittsburgh.

  • Ketel Marte 2B | ARI

Diamondbacks' Ketel Marte: Could return this week

Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said Monday that Marte (ankle) could be activated from the 10-day injured list during the team's upcoming road trip, which begins Tuesday in San Francisco and ends Sunday in Houston, Jesse Friedman of GoPHNX.com reports.

Marte has been ramping up workouts in recent days and appears to be making significant progress. The second baseman has been sidelined since Aug. 19 due to an ankle sprain but looks to be on track for activation either mid-week or during the weekend.
