Diamondbacks' Ketel Marte: Out of Thursday's lineup

Marte is not in Thursday's lineup against the Padres.

Marte is hitting .151 with two home runs in 53 at-bats this month. Arizona will deploy both of its shortstops for Thursday's contest, with Geraldo Perdomo manning the keystone.

Cardinals' Nolan Gorman: To receive injection

Gorman (back) is scheduled to receive a pain-killing injection Thursday, John Denton of MLB.com reports.

Gorman was placed on the 10-day injured list Thursday, retroactive to Aug. 14, with a lower-back strain. The second baseman has been dealing with ongoing back discomfort since late July. The injection was going to keep him sidelined for at least the next three days, so the Cardinals opted to put him on the IL and bring up Richie Palacios. It's possible Gorman could return when first eligible Aug. 25 in Philadelphia.

Cardinals' Nolan Gorman: Placed on IL with back strain

Gorman was placed on the 10-day injured list Thursday, retroactive to Aug. 14, with a lower-back strain.

Gorman has been dealing with off-and-on back discomfort since late July and will now get an extended period of rest. He leaves behind an .815 OPS with 24 home runs and 67 RBI in 104 games on the year. Jose Fermin and Taylor Motter will likely share time at second base for the Cardinals while Gorman is on the shelf.

  • Jake Alu LF | WAS

Nationals' Jake Alu: Sitting against lefty

Alu is out of the lineup again Thursday against the Red Sox.

Michael Chavis will start at second base and bat sixth as the Nationals take on another left-hander in Chris Sale. Alu has slashed just .235/.273/.314 across his first 55 major-league plate appearances and will probably continue to sit versus southpaws.

Cardinals' Nolan Gorman: Thinks he could DH Thursday

Gorman (back) believes he could be available at least as a designated hitter Thursday, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

Gorman is dealing with a nagging back injury which he actually initially suffered back in 2020-21 offseason during a weightlifting incident. It's more of an issue for him in the field when he has to bend over to field grounders, so it's possible he could stay on the roster but be limited to DH duty for a while. The Cardinals could also opt to go ahead and put him on the injured list to give him some extended rest, especially since they have a few other players that are also banged up.

  • Rockies' Brendan Rodgers: Heating up at home

Rodgers went 2-for-4 with two doubles, three RBI and a run scored Wednesday against the Diamondbacks.

Rodgers delivered a two-RBI double and came around to score in the sixth inning to briefly give the Rockies the lead. After a slow start in his return from a hamstring injury that cost him the first four months of the season, Rodgers has benefitted from hitter-friendly Coors Field to tally four hits across 12 at-bats while racking up five RBI and two runs scored across his last three games. He's hit between fourth and sixth in Colorado's lineup but figures to be an everyday player down the stretch of the campaign.

  • Brice Turang 2B | MIL

Brewers' Brice Turang: Sitting against lefty

Turang isn't in the Brewers' lineup Wednesday against the Dodgers.

With left-handed ace Clayton Kershaw set to start on the mound for Los Angeles, Turang will take a seat for the beginning of Wednesday's game. Andruw Monasterio will shift to second base in Turang's place, allowing Brian Anderson to start at third.

  • Jake Alu LF | WAS

Nationals' Jake Alu: Heads to bench Wednesday

Alu is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Red Sox, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports.

Though Alu is a right-handed hitter, the Nationals have been treating him as a strong-side platoon infielder. He'll sit for the Nationals' second straight matchup with a left-hander, giving way to Michael Chavis at second base while southpaw James Paxton takes the hill for Boston.

  • Nolan Gorman 2B | STL

Cardinals' Nolan Gorman: Out with back issue Wednesday

Gorman (back) is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Athletics, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports.

Gorman will remain on the bench for a third consecutive game on account of lower-back tightness, affording Taylor Motter another turn at second base. The Cardinals seem to be viewing Gorman as day-to-day with the hope that he'll be able to return to the starting nine at some point during their four-game series with the Mets, which begins Thursday.

  • Nico Hoerner 2B | CHC

Cubs' Nico Hoerner: Swipes 30th bag

Hoerner went 2-for-3 with a stolen base in Tuesday's loss to the White Sox.

Hoerner drew a walk and stole second base with the score tied 3-3 in the fifth inning. He was later thrown out attempting another steal in the seventh. The 26-year-old has now reached 30 stolen bases on the season after setting his previous career high of 20 steals last year. In 29 games since the All-Star break, Hoerner is 10-for-12 on steal attempts while slashing .308/.390/.483 with seven doubles, four home runs, 14 RBI, 24 runs scored across 136 plate appearances during that span.
