  • Rene Pinto C | PHI

Rays' Rene Pinto: Sitting out Saturday

Pinto isn't in the Rays' lineup for Saturday's game against the Rockies, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

Pinto has struck out in each of his last five at-bats since Tuesday, so he'll get a day to regroup Saturday. Ben Rortvedt will fill in behind the dish and bat eighth.

  • Twins' Christian Vazquez: Not starting Saturday

Vazquez is not in the starting lineup for Saturday's game against the Guardians.

Vazquez and Ryan Jeffers have alternated starts at catcher over the first eight games of the season, and the latter will start Saturday. Vazquez has started the season going 2-for-10 with two RBI.

  • Jake Rogers C | DET

Tigers' Jake Rogers: Sitting out Saturday

Rogers is not in the starting lineup Saturday against the Athletics.

Carson Kelly will draw the start at catcher and bat ninth Saturday against Oakland right-hander Paul Blackburn. Rogers has struggled at the plate to start the season, posting just one hit and one walk while striking out 10 times over 16 plate appearances.

  • Red Sox's Reese McGuire: Homers in win

McGuire went 1-for-4 with a home run and two RBI in Friday's 8-6 win over the Angels.

McGuire started for the fourth time in the last five games which is a surprising development. In spring training, Connor Wong was the presumed primary catcher, but he's made just three starts. McGuire is 6-for-19 with two extra-base hits and three RBI over seven appearances.

  • Angels' Logan O'Hoppe: Hammers grand slam

O'Hoppe went 2-for-4 with a grand slam in Friday's loss to Boston.

O'Hoppe's first home run of the year was a game-tying grand slam to dead center in the sixth inning. The skilled catcher is slashing .450/.542/.750 with three extra-base knocks and six RBI through 24 plate appearances. O'Hoppe has multiple hits in three of his seven appearances this season.

  • Royals' Salvador Perez: Perfect at plate Friday

Perez went 3-for-3 with a double, an RBI and a walk in Friday's 2-1 win over the White Sox.

Perez turned in his third three-hit game of the season, but it was his walk that set up the go-ahead run -- he was replaced by pinch runner Dairon Blanco, who stole second and scored on an MJ Melendez single in the eighth inning. Perez is batting .387 with two home runs, nine RBI, one double and four runs scored over 33 plate appearances for a strong start to 2024.

  • Danny Jansen C | TEX

Blue Jays' Danny Jansen: Takes batting practice

Jansen (wrist) caught two live batting practice sessions and took batting practice of his own on the field Thursday, Shi Davidi of Sportsnet.ca reports.

He's slated to face a high-velocity pitching machine next. The Blue Jays are hoping Jansen will be ready to begin a rehab assignment with Low-A Dunedin on Sunday, when he would catch fellow rehabber Alek Manoah (shoulder). Jansen has been out with a small fracture in his right wrist.

  • Austin Wells C | NYY

Yankees' Austin Wells: Sitting against left-hander

Wells is absent from the lineup for Friday's game versus the Blue Jays.

It's southpaw Yusei Kikuchi on the bump for Toronto, so the left-handed hitting Wells will yield to Jose Trevino at catcher. Wells and Trevino have split catching duties down the middle for the Yankees thus far, drawing four starts apiece.

  • White Sox's Martin Maldonado: Sitting Thursday

Maldonado isn't in the White Sox's lineup for Thursday's game against the Royals.

Maldonado remains hitless through his first 11 at-bats of the season, and he will get a day off Thursday as Korey Lee starts behind the plate and bats ninth.

  • Royals' Salvador Perez: Three hits, two RBI in win

Perez went 3-for-4 with two RBI in Wednesday's 4-3 loss to the Orioles.

Perez had RBI singles in his first two at-bats of the game. The catcher has racked up nine hits over the last four contests, and he's added eight RBI in that span. He was a little quiet to start the season, but it's taken little time for him to get into form. Perez looks set to see a near everyday role between catcher, designated hitter and first base, and he's batted cleanup in every game so far.
