  • Tom Murphy C | SF

Mariners' Tom Murphy: Not in Tuesday's starting nine

Murphy is not starting Tuesday against the Red Sox.

He'll take a seat after going hitless in his last six at-bats. Cal Raleigh is set to catch for Tyler Anderson and bat ninth.

  • Yan Gomes C | CHC

Athletics' Yan Gomes: Heads to bench

Gomes will sit Tuesday against the Royals, Shayna Rubin of The San Jose Mercury News reports.

Gomes has moved ahead of Sean Murphy on Oakland's catcher depth chart recently, starting 10 of the team's last 14 games behind the plate prior to Tuesday's contest. Murphy will fill the position this time around.

  • Gary Sanchez C | MIL

Yankees' Gary Sanchez: Heads to bench

Sanchez will sit Tuesday against Baltimore.

Sanchez sits for the second game in a row despite the fact that he hit a walkoff single in the bottom of the 10th inning Monday. Kyle Higashioka will start behind the plate, as he's done for the majority of Gerrit Cole's starts this season.

  • Blue Jays' Alejandro Kirk: Not in lineup

Kirk will sit Tuesday against Tampa Bay.

Kirk has been very impressive at the plate recently, going 9-for-27 with four homers and just three strikeouts over his last seven games, but he'll continue to receive frequent days off like most catchers. Reese McGuire takes over behind the plate Tuesday, catching Jose Berrios.

  • Jonah Heim C | ATL

Rangers' Jonah Heim: Sitting second straight

Heim is not starting Tuesday against the Astros.

He'll yield the catching duties to Jose Trevino for the second night in a row despite going 3-for-6 with a double, home run and two RBI over the weekend in Oakland.

  • Gary Sanchez C | MIL

Yankees' Gary Sanchez: Swats walkoff single

Sanchez went 1-for-2 with an RBI single in an extra-inning victory over Minnesota on Monday.

Sanchez pinch hit for Kyle Higashioka in the eighth inning and flied out to left field. His second at-bat was much more impactful, as the backstop produced a walkoff single in the bottom of the 10th. The RBI was only his second in his past six games, a stretch during which he has gone 2-for-19 with four strikeouts.

  • Indians' Roberto Perez: Activated from injured list

Perez (shoulder) was activated off the injured list Tuesday, Mandy Bell of MLB.com reports.

Perez has been out since early August while battling shoulder inflammation, but he's ready to go after appearing in eight rehab contests. Austin Hedges will start behind the plate in the first half of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Twins, but Perez will likely return to the lineup for the nightcap. Ryan Lavarnway is no longer needed with Perez back in action, so he was designated for assignment to clear space on the roster.

  • Seby Zavala C | LAD

White Sox's Seby Zavala: Optioned to Triple-A

Zavala was optioned to Triple-A Charlotte on Tuesday.

Zavala had been in the majors since early July, first sharing the catcher spot with Zack Collins while Yasmani Grandal was out with a knee injury and then serving as Grandal's backup with Collins heading to the minors. He hasn't done much in 104 plate appearances, hitting just .183/.240/.376, so the White Sox elected to recall Collins to fill the backup spot and send Zavala back to the minors.

  • Jonah Heim C | ATL

Rangers' Jonah Heim: On bench Monday

Heim will sit Monday against Houston.

Heim and Jose Trevino continue to split time fairly evenly behind the plate. Heim's .202/.240/.366 season slash line doesn't make a great case for a larger share of the available starts, though neither does Trevino's .232/.262/.325 performance.

  • Astros' Martin Maldonado: Sitting Monday

Maldonado will sit Monday against the Rangers, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports.

Maldonado continues to handle a very heavy workload behind the plate despite his .171/.272/.296 season slash line. He started 15 of the Astros' last 16 games heading into Monday but will rest here with Garrett Stubbs set to catch Jake Odorizzi.
