Blake Hunt C | BAL
Orioles' Blake Hunt: Demoted, but with taxi squad
The Orioles optioned Hunt to Triple-A Norfolk on Wednesday.
Though Hunt will temporarily move off the 26-man active roster to clear a spot for trade-deadline pickup Gregory Soto, he won't report to Norfolk right away and will remain part of the Orioles' taxi squad, per Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com. Backup catcher James McCann has been medically cleared to play after suffering multiple nose fractures Monday, but if the injury is creating too much discomfort in the coming days, he could be a candidate to go on the injured list. Even if McCann is shelved and Hunt gets recalled in a corresponding move, the 25-year-old backstop would still be in line for limited work behind top catcher Adley Rutschman.

Endy Rodriguez C | PIT
Pirates' Endy Rodriguez: Hitting from both sides of plate
Rodriguez (elbow) has resumed hitting off a tee from the right side of the plate, MLB.com reports.
Rodriguez resumed swinging from the left side of the plate in early July, so this marks another step forward in his recovery. He was originally ruled out for the entire 2024 season, though it's now possible that he will serve as the designated hitter in minor-league games late in the campaign.

Matt Thaiss C | LAA
Angels' Matt Thaiss: Plays huge role in win
Thaiss went 3-for-5 with a double, five RBI and two stolen bases in Tuesday's 10-7 win over the Rockies.
Thaiss had a two-run double in the third inning, a two-run single in the fourth and an RBI single in the eighth. He also logged his first two steals of the campaign. Prior to Tuesday, Thaiss hadn't done much of anything well -- he entered the contest with just seven RBI all year. He's slashing .253/.347/.373 with one home run, 12 RBI, eight runs scored, seven doubles and two steals through 95 plate appearances. He's played roughly once a week in July, so Logan O'Hoppe figures to remain in a starting role behind the dish.

Yainer Diaz C | HOU
Astros' Yainer Diaz: Reaches 10-homer mark
Diaz went 4-for-4 with a solo home run in Tuesday's 6-2 loss to the Pirates.
Diaz's fourth-inning homer was the Astros' lone extra-base hit in the contest. He's hit safely in six straight games and has an extra-base hit in five of them, going 12-for-24 with six RBI in that span. For the season, he's up to a .295/.318/.441 slash line with 10 homers, 58 RBI, 45 runs scored, 18 doubles, three triples and one stolen base over 393 plate appearances.

Alejandro Kirk C | TOR
Blue Jays' Alejandro Kirk: Exits after HBP
Kirk was removed from Tuesday's game versus Baltimore due to a left elbow contusion.
Kirk took a 98-mile-per-hour sinker off his left elbow during the sixth inning of Tuesday's contest and was replaced behind the dish by Brian Serven during the bottom half of the frame. Although Kirk managed to escape with just a bruise, it's still unclear if he'll be able to start Wednesday's series finale. Should he need to miss any amount of time, the Jays would presumably call up another catcher from the minors.

Blake Sabol C | SF
Giants' Blake Sabol: Back in big leagues
The Giants recalled Sabol from Triple-A Sacramento on Tuesday, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports.
The 26-year-old has been in the minors since late May and will rejoin the Giants after he posted a .878 OPS in his past 22 games with Sacramento. Sabol isn't likely to see significant playing time while up with the big club.

Thayron Liranzo C | DET
Tigers' Thayron Liranzo: Traded in Flaherty deal
The Tigers acquired Liranzo and infielder Trey Sweeney from the Dodgers on Tuesday in exchange for right-hander Jack Flaherty, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports.
Liranzo is known for his raw power and impressive patience at the dish, although his production at Single-A last season (155 wRC+) was more noteworthy than what he has done this season in his age-20/21 season at High-A. Liranzo slashed .220/.344/.356 with seven home runs, a 15.6 percent walk rate and a 26.1 percent strikeout rate in 74 games with High-A Great Lakes. Sometimes hitters wait to get going at the plate until the weather warms up in the Midwest League, but Liranzo has a .627 OPS since the start of June. He gets mixed reviews for his defense behind the plate and got 24 starts this season at first base in addition to his 43 starts at catcher for Great Lakes.

James McCann C | BAL
Orioles' James McCann: Cleared to play despite fractures
McCann has been diagnosed with multiple nose fractures but has been cleared to play, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports.
McCann remarkably stayed in Monday's game against the Blue Jays after being struck in the face by a Yariel Rodriguez pitch. He is undoubtedly very sore and the Orioles would probably prefer to avoid using him, if possible, but he'll be available off the bench Tuesday against Toronto.

Tomas Nido C | CHC
Cubs' Tomas Nido: Undergoes knee surgery
Nido underwent a debridgement on his right knee Tuesday, Maddie Lee of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
Nido landed on the 10-day injured list last week with a sprained knee and has now had it scoped. He's expected to be sidelined for 4-to-6 weeks, per Andy Martinez of Marquee Sports Network, so he'll likely be out until September.

Luke Maile C | CIN
Reds' Luke Maile: Starting rehab stint
Maile (back) was sent to Triple-A Louisville to begin a rehab assignment Tuesday.
The 33-year-old landed on the shelf in early July with a herniated disc and was hoping to return just after the All-Star break, but his absence is now approaching a month. Maile still shouldn't require a lengthy rehab assignment, so he could be back with the Reds within the next week.
