  • Sean Manaea SP | NYM

Athletics' Sean Manaea: Takes seventh loss Friday

Manaea (9-7) allowed three earned runs on nine hits over five innings in a loss to the Rockies on Friday. He struck out five.

The good news was that Manaea didn't give up a barrage of runs in the prime hitting conditions of Coors Field. On the other hand, he got minimal run support from an offense that was stymied by Kyle Freeland, who held Oakland batters to five hits and three walks over six scoreless innings. Manaea encouragingly refrained from issuing any free passes for the second straight start, and he was pulled after just 74 pitches. He did surrender a solo home run to Nolan Arenado in his final inning and also saw Charlie Blackmon tag him for a pair of doubles, but he limited the damage overall. Despite the defeat, Manaea has allowed three earned runs or less in 10 consecutive starts, a stretch that was initiated June 5. He'll look to bounce back and hit double-digit wins for the second consecutive season when he faces the Blue Jays next Wednesday.

  • Tigers' Warwick Saupold: Designated for assignment

Saupold was designated for assignment by the Tigers on Saturday.

He was bumped off the 40-man roster after the Tigers claimed Josh Smoker off waivers. Saupold owns a career 4.98 ERA and 1.58 WHIP over 106.2 innings in the majors.

  • Red Sox's Craig Kimbrel: Blows first save since May

Kimbrel blew his third save chance of the season, allowing two runs on one hit and three walks over 1.1 innings in Friday's 4-3 extra-inning win over the Twins.

Kimbrel was well rested, having three days rest before coming on in the eighth inning, so overuse wasn't a factor. The closer told Michael Silverman of the Boston Herald that he didn't have his best stuff and was grateful his teammates could pick him up after costing starter Chris Sale a win. He had successfully converted 23 consecutive save opportunities going back to May 9.

  • Andres Machado RP | WAS

Royals' Andres Machado: Called up from minors

Machado was recalled from Double-A Northwest Arkansas on Saturday.

Machado will be available out of the bullpen for both games of Saturday's doubleheader. The right-hander has only appeared in two big-league contests -- both coming last year -- and was in the midst of a rough year at Triple-A Omaha before transitioning to a relief role at the Double-A level in mid-June. Since shifting to the bullpen, he's logged a 3.00 ERA and 1.50 WHIP with 11 strikeouts in 12 innings for Northwest Arkansas.

  • Chris Devenski RP | NYM

Astros' Chris Devenski: Rattled in second straight outing

Devenski did not record an out and allowed five runs on four hits and a walk in Friday's 11-2 loss to the Rangers.

Devenski has been rocked in his last two outings, giving up eight runs, seven hits, three home runs and two walks without recording an out. A bad night can be written off, but warning bells should be going off after this latest appearance. Devenski has allowed runs in five of his last seven appearances, posting a 25.07 ERA with four homers allowed in 4.2 innings. Expect the Astros to move him out of a high-leverage role, replacing him with the newly acquired Ryan Pressly.

  • Ryan Pressly RP | CHC

Astros' Ryan Pressly: High-leverage role likely

Houston general manager Jeff Luhnow believes Pressly will pitch high-leverage innings, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports.

The general manager ultimately will defer to manager A.J. Hinch, but a late-inning role seems likely, particularly after seeing the Astros' bullpen blow up in an ugly 11-2 loss Friday. The right-handed Pressly, who was acquired from Minnesota on Friday, has a 3.40 ERA (2.99 FIP) with 69 strikeouts over 47.1 innings. He's also been effective against left-handers, limiting them to a .636 OPS this season.

  • Reynaldo Lopez RP | ATL

White Sox's Reynaldo Lopez: Crushed by Jays

Lopez (4-9) took the loss Friday as the White Sox fell 10-5 to the Blue Jays, coughing up eight runs on seven hits -- including five home runs -- and four walks over 4.1 innings while striking out three.

The five homers allowed were one shy of the modern-day MLB record. Lopez has now given up at least five runs in three straight starts, sending his ERA on the season soaring almost a full run to 4.57. He'll try to turn things around Thursday at home against the Royals.

  • Jorge Lopez RP | WAS

Royals' Jorge Lopez: Dealt to Kansas City

Lopez was traded along with Brett Phillips to the Royals in exchange for Mike Moustakes on Friday, Jeffrey Flanagan of MLB.com reports.

Lopez made 10 appearances at the major-league level for the Brewers this season, posting a solid 2.75 ERA and 1.47 WHIP with 15 strikeouts over 19.2 innings. It's unclear if he'll begin his stint with the Royals at Triple-A or with the big club, though the 25-year-old right-hander should see plenty of opportunities as part of a rebuilding ballclub.

  • Jalen Beeks RP | TEX

Rays' Jalen Beeks: To work in long relief Saturday

Beeks will serve as Saturday's long reliever following Ryne Stanek's start against the Orioles, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

It was initially thought that Beeks would get the start at some point over the weekend, but the Rays have elected to use him out of the bullpen, as he's expected to toss a bulk of the innings Saturday. It's unclear if Beeks will be used as a starter or out of the bullpen moving forward.

  • Ryne Stanek RP | STL

Rays' Ryne Stanek: To serve as opener Saturday

Stanek is slated to start Saturday's matchup against the Orioles, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

Stanek is poised to open his 15th game of the season, and he sports an outstanding 1.86 ERA and 0.98 WHIP with 49 strikeouts over 38.2 innings. Jalen Beeks will take over as the long reliever following Stanek's departure from the ballgame.
