Athletics' Mason Miller: Activation coming Wednesday

A's manager Mark Kotsay said Miller (finger) is scheduled to be reinstated from the 15-day injured list Wednesday, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.

The right-hander landed on the shelf just after the All-Star break due to a fractured pinkie finger on his left hand, but he's ready to rejoin the active roster after being sidelined for the 15-day minimum. Miller has a 2.21 ERA, 0.84 WHIP and 70:14 K:BB across 40.2 innings this season and should immediately reclaim the closer role from Tyler Ferguson.

  • Rangers' Walter Pennington: Sent back to minors

The Rangers optioned Pennington to Triple-A Round Rock on Tuesday.

The 26-year-old will give way to Tyler Mahle on the active roster Tuesday just four days after being called up from Round Rock. Pennington appeared in one game for the Rangers, allowing one run on one hit and three walks across one inning. Pennington was acquired by the Rangers from Kansas City before the trade deadline.

  • Dylan Coleman RP | NYY

Astros' Dylan Coleman: Removed from 40-man roster

The Astros designated Coleman for assignment Tuesday.

The club needed to clear a 40-man roster spot for the addition of Zach Dezenzo. Coleman has spent virtually all of his season at Triple-A Sugar Land, where he holds a 6.50 ERA and 42:42 K:BB over 36 frames.

  • Anthony Gose RP | NYM

    Guardians' Anthony Gose: Contract selected

The Guardians selected Gose's contract from Triple-A Columbus on Tuesday, Mandy Bell of MLB.com reports.

The left-hander will join the big-league roster for the first time since 2022, when he underwent Tommy John surgery late in the season. Gose has pitched well at Triple-A this season with a 3.29 ERA and 55:23 K:BB over 38.1 innings.

  • Tigers' Mason Englert: Beginning rehab assignment

Englert (elbow) will begin a rehab assignment at Single-A Lakeland on Tuesday, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.

Englert has been sidelined since July 6 due to inflammation in his throwing elbow but will begin pitching in games Tuesday. The 24-year-old has bounced between the majors and Triple-A Toledo this season, logging a 5.95 ERA and 1.32 WHIP across 19.2 innings with Detroit.

  • Emmanuel Clase RP | CLE

Guardians' Emmanuel Clase: Takes second loss

Clase (4-2) allowed an unearned run without putting a runner on base over one inning, taking the extra-inning loss versus the Diamondbacks on Monday.

Arizona played some small ball, using a pair of sacrifices to scrape together a run in the 10th inning, The Guardians couldn't respond, leaving Clase to take his first loss since April 28. The closer has gone 10 innings without allowing an earned run, but he's been tagged for two unearned runs in that span. Clase remains rock-solid with a 0.69 ERA, 0.63 WHIP and 45:6 K:BB over 52.1 innings while adding 33 saves in 36 chances.

  • Kirby Yates RP | LAA

Rangers' Kirby Yates: Earns fourth win

Yates (4-1) picked up the extra-inning win Monday against the Astros, pitching two innings while allowing one unearned run and one walk. He struck out four.

The Texas closer entered during a 2-2 tie in the ninth inning and returned in the 10th to secure the win. Yates was charged with an unearned run when the automatic runner in extra innings scored after he plunked Jeremy Pena with the bases loaded. This marks the 23rd career win for the 37-year-old reliever, as he has pitched to a splendid 1.08 ERA, 0.91 WHIP and 59:19 K:BB across 41.2 innings this season.

  • Griffin Jax RP | TB

Twins' Griffin Jax: Collects eighth save

Jax picked up the save in Monday's 3-0 win over the Cubs, pitching a scoreless inning with one strikeout. He allowed one hit.

Jax secured his first save since June 23, working around a Cody Bellinger single to wrap up the Twins' 63rd win of the season. Jhoan Duran worked the eighth inning, retiring the eight and nine hitters before allowing a double to Ian Happ and then striking out Michael Busch. Perhaps manager Rocco Baldelli will start using Jax in more save situations amid a tight AL Wild Card race as the 29-year-old has been better than Duran this season, pitching to a 2.01 ERA and 2.11 FIP -- versus Duran's 3.47 ERA and 3.91 FIP -- across 49.1 innings with an 11.9 K/9.

  • Justin Slaten RP | BOS

Red Sox's Justin Slaten: Now throwing at 120 feet

Slaten (elbow) has been cleared to throw up to 120 feet, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.

Slaten has been progressing through a throwing program after landing on the 15-day injured list due to right elbow inflammation July 12. He's yet to gain clearance for mound work but could get approval to do so shortly if all continues to go well in his rehab.

  • Mason Miller SP | SD

    Athletics' Mason Miller: Faces hitters

Miller (finger) threw a live bullpen session Monday, Justice delos Santos of MLB.com reports.

Miller is dealing with a fractured finger on his non-throwing hand and continued to throw bullpen sessions while he had a cast on. He played catch for the first time without the cast Saturday and has already advanced to facing batters. The standout 25-year-old becomes eligible to return Friday, though it's unclear if he'll need to miss additional time.
