  • Yankees' Ron Marinaccio: Sent back to Triple-A

The Yankees optioned Marinaccio to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Wednesday.

Called up from Triple-A earlier in the day, Marinaccio went unused out of the bullpen in the Yankees' 6-5 win over the Phillies. He'll now head back to Triple-A as the Yankees look to open up a spot on the 26-man active roster for trade-deadline pickup Enyel De Los Santos ahead of their next game Friday versus the Blue Jays.

  • Clay Holmes RP | NYM

Yankees' Clay Holmes: Rebounds for 22nd save

Holmes earned the save in Wednesday's 6-5 win over the Phillies, working around one hit in a scoreless ninth inning.

Protecting a one-run lead, it looked like Holmes could be in trouble again after Kyle Schwarber led off the ninth with a single. However, he would get Austin Hays to fly out before coaxing a game-ending, double-play ball off the bat of Bryce Harper. The 31-year-old Holmes had blown three straight save opportunities prior to Wednesday, including a 26-pitch appearance Tuesday. Despite his recent inconsistency, Holmes still sports a solid 2.82 ERA with a 1.34 WHIP and 45:12 K:BB across 44.2 innings this season while converting 22 of 30 save chances.

  • Seth Martinez RP | BOS

Astros' Seth Martinez: Headed to Triple-A

The Astros optioned Martinez to Triple-A Sugar Land on Wednesday, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.

Martinez is one of the casualties as the Astros officially add trade acquisitions Yusei Kikuchi and Caleb Ferguson to the 26-man active roster. He holds a 2.92 ERA but an ugly 34:18 K:BB over 49.1 innings with the Astros this season.

  • Rafael Montero RP | NYY

Astros' Rafael Montero: DFA'd by Houston

The Astros designated Montero for assignment Wednesday.

Montero is in the second year of a three-year, $34.5 million contract, and the Astros appear willing to absorb what remains on that deal. The veteran reliever made 41 appearances for Houston this season, posting a 4.70 ERA and 23:19 K:BB over 38.1 innings. Montero will likely pass through waivers unclaimed and will have the ability to elect free agency.

  • Yohan Ramirez RP | PIT

Red Sox's Yohan Ramirez: Removed from 40-man roster

The Red Sox designated Ramirez for assignment Wednesday, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.

Ramirez was claimed off waivers Sunday and gave up three runs (two earned) over 1.1 innings in Tuesday's loss to the Mariners in his lone appearance for the Red Sox. He's already made appearances with four different teams at the big-league level this season.

  • Chris Martin RP | TEX

Red Sox's Chris Martin: Could begin rehab games next week

Martin (elbow) threw a successful 25-pitch bullpen session Wednesday and is slated to throw off a mound again in the coming days, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.

As long as he comes out of the next bullpen session with no concerns, Martin is expected to be cleared to start a rehab assignment next week. He's been out since early July with right elbow inflammation but looks to be progressing toward a return in early or mid-August.

  • Liam Hendriks RP | MIN

Red Sox's Liam Hendriks: Hopes for clearance to face hitters

Hendriks (elbow) is headed to Texas to meet with his surgeon and hopes to be cleared to face hitters, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.

Hendriks has been throwing two bullpen sessions per week over the last month as he works his way back from Tommy John surgery. In his most recent session Tuesday, he threw 35 pitches and used his full repertoire. There's no clear timetable for Hendriks' return to the active roster yet, but he wouldn't appear too far off from a rehab assignment if things continue trending in a positive direction.

  • Ben Joyce RP | LAA

Angels' Ben Joyce: Should work as closer

Joyce is expected to operate as the Angels' closer after the trade of Luis Garcia on Tuesday.

Garcia was labeled the closer while Joyce was named the setup man and closer-in-waiting after the trade of Carlos Estevez over the weekend, and Garcia has now also been dealt. However, manager Ron Washington used Joyce in the eighth inning Tuesday while Hunter Strickland picked up the save, so it remains to be seen if the skipper sticks with the initial plan. Joyce still struggles to control his 101.8-mph fastball at times and has a 4.0 BB/9 this season, but that's an improvement from his first taste of the big leagues last year when he walked nine over 10 innings and had an 8.1 BB/9 at Triple-A. The right-hander has a 2.01 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 19:10 K:BB in 19 appearances this season.

  • Brock Stewart RP | LAD

Twins' Brock Stewart: Back to IL with shoulder strain

The Twins placed Stewart on the 15-day injured list Wednesday with a right shoulder strain, Betsy Helfand of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.

Stewart just returned a week ago from a lengthy absence due to shoulder issues and is now headed back to the IL. The righty was roughed up for seven runs over 2.1 innings covering three appearances over the last week while showing diminished velocity. Stewart has often been a lockdown reliever for the Twins when healthy, but whether he'll be able to regain that form this season is a fair question.

  • Jose Cuas RP | KC

Blue Jays' Jose Cuas: Demoted to Triple-A

The Blue Jays optioned Cuas to Triple-A Buffalo on Wednesday.

Cuas will head back to Buffalo to make room on the active roster for right-hander Paolo Espino, who was called up from Triple-A to start Wednesday's game in Baltimore. The righty reliever's latest stint with the Blue Jays lasted just two days, with Cuas striking out one but walking three batters in a scoreless inning of relief in Tuesday's 6-2 loss.
