Hader (2-4) picked up the win in the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Rockies, striking out one in a perfect ninth inning.

Acquired from Milwaukee on Monday, Hader entered a 2-2 game and breezed through the bottom of the Colorado order before fellow ex-Brewer Trent Grisham walked it off with a solo shot. Hader had some uncharacteristic stumbles before the All-Star break, but in five appearances since he's allowed only one run in five innings with an 8:1 K:BB, and he should provide the Padres with some stability in the closer role.

Knehr didn't factor into the decision in a 3-2 win over the Rockies during the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks over 3.2 innings. He struck out one and also hit two batters with pitches.

Making his first big-league start of the year, Knehr needed 82 pitches (48 strikes) to record only 11 outs before getting the hook, and his line could have been a lot worse as he exited with the bases loaded and two outs in the top of the fourth inning. Fortunately for the Padres, none of those runners came around to score. Knehr will likely head back to Triple-A El Paso with a 1.50 ERA, 0.75 WHIP and 8:2 K:BB through 12 MLB innings.

Abbott did not factor into the decision Tuesday against the Mets, allowing no runs on two hits while striking out three and walking two over five innings.

Abbott was called upon to start for a thin Nationals rotation and rose to the occasion, throwing 51 of 76 pitches for strikes across five frames. It was his fourth appearance of the season and his first as a starter. He pitched sporadically in relief twice in July and once in June. The righty has allowed just one earned run across nine innings this season for the Nats, and will take a 1.00 ERA into his next appearance.

Beede will start Wednesday's game against the Brewers, Mike Persak of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

The right-hander has worked exclusively out of the bullpen for the Giants and Pirates this year, but he'll step into the rotation Wednesday after Pittsburgh traded away Jose Quintana. Beede covered three innings during his last appearance Sunday, so he shouldn't be expected to have a full starting workload. It's unclear if Pittsburgh plans to keep him in the rotation or if he'll shift back to the bullpen after Wednesday's outing.

Nelson (3-2) took the loss Tuesday in Atlanta, allowing two runs on two hits, two walks and a hit batsman while striking out three in two innings.

Nelson opened for the second time this season and held Atlanta scoreless through the first two innings. In the third, he hit Michael Harris and walked Ronald Acuna and was promptly removed. The 26-year-old had allowed only two runs while striking out 17 in 14.2 innings before Tuesday's loss. He'll likely return to a middle-relief role for his next appearance.

Manager Derek Shelton said Bednar was unavailable during Tuesday's win over the Brewers due to a lower-back injury, Kevin Gorman of TribLive.com reports.

Bednar missed some time with the back issue a month ago and was able to avoid the injured list, and it remains to be seen if he'll require a trip to the shelf this time around. In his absence, Wil Crowe picked up save Tuesday, and Yerry De Los Santos could also be in the mix for saves should Bednar be forced to miss additional time.

Thompson (8-5) allowed five runs on 10 hits across 4.2 innings to take the loss Tuesday against the Cardinals. He walked two and struck out one.

Thompson allowed home runs to Dylan Carlson and Paul Goldschmidt, and was just generally ineffective on the road against St. Louis. The righty has now alternated good and bad starts his last four times out, though he's been mostly solid for the bulk of the year, as evidenced by his 3.48 ERA across 93 innings. He'll look to get back on track in his next scheduled outing Sunday against the Marlins.

Scott was recalled from Triple-A El Paso ahead of Game 2 of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Rockies.

Scott will rejoin the Friars on Tuesday after spending the past couple weeks in the minors. The 30-year-old appeared in four MLB games in July and gave up five earned runs on 11 hits with a 10:4 K:BB across 6.2 frames.

Bender (back) was reinstated from the 60-day injured list Tuesday, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.

Bender had been out since mid-May, but he's ready to after four scoreless, hitless rehab appearances. Prior to his absence, he'd recorded a mediocre 4.50 ERA in 14 innings of work but had recorded six saves. It's unlikely he'll unseat current closer Tanner Scott right away.

Rucker was recalled from Triple-A Iowa on Tuesday.

After spending a month with Iowa, Rucker will return to Chicago for another stint with the big club. He figures to work in middle-to-long relief like he did last time he was in town.
