Diamondbacks' Kevin Ginkel: Charged with blown save

Ginkel allowed one run on one hit over one inning and was charged with a blown save in Saturday's 5-4 extra-innings loss to the Orioles.

With the Diamondbacks ahead 4-3, Ginkel entered to start the eighth inning and dispatched the first two batters with ease before Anthony Santander squared up a fastball outside the zone for a game-tying home run. It was the third blown save of the season for Ginkel, who was moved back to a setup role when Paul Sewald was activated off the injured list last week. Ginkel has a 3.31 ERA and 1.16 WHIP with four walks and 15 strikeouts over 16.1 innings.

  • Bryce Jarvis RP | ARI

Diamondbacks' Bryce Jarvis: Takes loss in extras

Jarvis (0-2) was the losing pitcher in Saturday's 5-4 extra-innings loss to Baltimore. He allowed one run on one hit and two walks while striking out one over one-plus innings.

Arizona manager Torey Lovullo turned to Jarvis, the team's long arm out of the bullpen, to navigate extra frames. The lefty managed to extricate himself from a bases-loaded jam in the 10th inning thanks to double-play groundout but couldn't escape the 11th. Jordan Westburg reached down for the first pitch -- a slider at the bottom of the zone -- and got the end of the bat on the ball, which landed just inside the right-field line, plating the automatic runner for the Orioles' walk-off win. It was the fifth time in the last six games that Jarvis has allowed at least a run, and he has an 8.59 ERA over that span.

  • David Bednar RP | NYY

Pirates' David Bednar: Collects seventh save

Bednar gave up a run on two hits in the ninth inning Saturday to record his seventh save of the season in a 10-9 win over the Cubs.

The right-hander made things interesting, giving up back-to-back hits to begin the ninth and allowing the tying run to get to third base with two outs, but Bednar escaped the jam. He's converted his last six save chances but has been volatile while doing it, getting tagged for runs in five of 11 appearances over that stretch while posting an 8.38 ERA and 12:3 K:BB through 9.2 innings. Bednar still has a grip on the Pirates' closer role and there is incentive to keep him in the ninth inning and build his trade value.

  • Cardinals' Andrew Kittredge: Implodes in seventh inning

Kittredge (0-2) allowed three runs on two hits and a walk without striking out a batter in two-thirds of an inning to take the loss Saturday versus the Brewers.

Kittredge allowed just one run over his first 13 appearances of the season, but he's now given up four runs across his last three outings to begin May. Rhys Hoskins tagged the reliever for a three-run home run in the seventh inning Saturday, giving Kittredge his second blown save and second loss of the campaign. The right-hander sits with a 2.87 ERA, 1.09 WHIP, 15:4 K:BB and 10 holds over 15.2 innings, but it appears his dominance from early in the season is waning.

  • Trevor Megill RP | MIL

Brewers' Trevor Megill: Earns fourth save

Megill allowed two hits in a scoreless inning to earn the save in Saturday's 5-3 win over the Cardinals. He did not strike out or walk a batter.

Megill made things a little hairy by allowing two-out singles to Lars Nootbaar and Paul Goldschmidt before getting Nolan Arenado to line out. The save was Megill's fourth of the season, all of which have come in his last five outings. The right-hander owns a 0.93 ERA, 0.93 WHIP and 8:3 K:BB while also earning three holds over 9.2 innings this season. Megill has been the committee leader for saves recently, and that should continue at least until Joel Payamps (bereavement) is back with the Brewers.

  • Taylor Rogers RP | MIN

Giants' Taylor Rogers: Posts first win

Rogers (1-1) struck out two and hit one batter without allowing a hit, walk or run over two-thirds of an inning, earning the win Saturday versus the Reds.

Rogers relieved Mason Black in the fifth inning, and while he faced a bases-loaded situation, he was able to escape the jam unscathed. Rogers has kept runs off the board in four of his six appearances in May while posting a 10:0 K:BB over five innings. The southpaw is at a 3.77 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 19:3 K:BB with three holds through 14.1 innings overall.

  • Kevin Herget RP | NYM

Brewers' Kevin Herget: Heads back to Triple-A

The Brewers optioned Herget to Triple-A Nashville on Saturday.

Herget gave up two earned runs while recording a three-inning save and failing to notch a strikeout Friday against the Cardinals. Mitch White was added to the Brewers' active roster in a corresponding move.

  • Jose Cuas RP | KC

Cubs' Jose Cuas: Recalled from Triple-A

Cuas was recalled from Triple-A Iowa on Saturday, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports.

Cuas, who has given up eight earned runs in six MLB innings through five appearances this year, should work in low-leverage situations. He has 17 strikeouts and a 4.32 ERA in 8.1 innings at Triple-A.

  • Yency Almonte RP | LAD

Cubs' Yency Almonte: To IL with shoulder strain

Almonte was placed on the 15-day injured list Saturday with a right shoulder strain, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports.

He didn't recover well from his last outing Tuesday against the Padres and there is no timeline for his return, per manager Craig Counsell. Almonte has a 3.45 ERA, 1.09 WHIP, 20 strikeouts, one win and one save in 15.2 innings through 17 appearances.

  • Pirates' Roansy Contreras: Designated for assignment

Contreras was designated for assignment Saturday, Kevin Gorman of TribLive.com reports.

Contreras was out of minor-league options and had a 5.05 FIP and 1.65 WHIP in 12 appearances out of the big-league bullpen, so he was deemed expendable. At the peak of his fantasy value in 2021, Contreras sat 95-97 mph with his fastball as a starting pitcher, but he has averaged under 95 mph in back-to-back seasons, even while working in shorter stints out of the bullpen.
