The Tigers selected Melton's contract from Triple-A Toledo ahead of his scheduled start Wednesday versus the Pirates at PNC Park.

Detroit placed ace Tarik Skubal (personal) on the paternity list to open up a spot on the 26-man active roster for Melton, who will be making his MLB debut Wednesday. As a result of Melton's addition, the Tigers will be running out a six-man rotation this week, but expect the team to scale back to five men once Skubal returns from the paternity list to start Saturday versus Toronto. Whether Melton sticks around for additional starts will likely hinge on how he performs Wednesday, as well as how incumbent No. 5 starter Keider Montero fares in his upcoming outing Friday versus the Blue Jays. The 25-year-old Melton has been unfazed by minor-league competition during his stops at Toledo and Double-A Erie this season, accruing a 2.99 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 101:20 K:BB in 75.1 innings between the two affiliates.

Fitts (1-4) took the loss Tuesday as the Red Sox fell 4-1 to the Phillies, surrendering four runs on six hits over 3.1 innings. He struck out four without walking a batter.

Solo homers by Max Kepler and Kyle Schwarber in the second inning put the game out of reach for Boston, as Cristopher Sanchez was busy tossing a 12-K complete game for Philly. Fitts has served up seven long balls in 17 innings over his five big-league appearances and 17 innings since the beginning of June, fueling a 7.41 ERA, but with Tanner Houck (elbow) shut back down indefinitely and Hunter Dobbins (knee) lost for the season, there's no obvious internal replacement for Fitts in the Red Sox's rotation. He's scheduled to make his next start on the road early next week in Minnesota.

Mize (9-4) took the loss Tuesday as the Tigers were downed 8-5 by the Pirates, coughing up five runs (four earned) on 10 hits and a walk over four innings. He struck out five.

The right-hander tossed 62 of his 86 pitches for strikes and managed to keep the ball in the yard, but Mize still allowed far too much loud contact as six of the 10 hits off him wound up turning into doubles. He's been tagged for 11 runs (10 earned) over his last two starts, but Mize still sports a 3.40 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 82:23 K:BB through 92.2 inning on the year. He'll look to turn things around in his next outing, which is scheduled to come at home early next week against the Diamondbacks.

Rasmussen allowed two runs on three hits and a walk while striking out five in four innings Tuesday against the White Sox. He did not factor into the decision.

Rasmussen went nine up and nine down to open the game but ran into some trouble in the fourth. He allowed a double, two singles and a walk before a sacrifice fly plated a second run in the inning for the White Sox. Rasmussen exited after tossing 75 pitches, his most in an outing since he threw 92 on June 19. The team reported before the All-Star break that Rasmussen was expected to handle a typical starter's workload when making his next turn through the rotation, but it seems manager Kevin Cash is still being somewhat cautious with Rasmussen's pitch count. The right-hander lines up to toe the rubber again next week on the road versus the Yankees.

Detroit placed Skubal on the paternity list Wednesday, but he's expected to be activated in time to make his next start Saturday versus the Blue Jays at Comerica Park, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports.

Skubal will likely spend the maximum three days away from the team while he and his wife welcome their second child before he returns to action Saturday to start on five days' rest. By temporarily deactivating Skubal, the Tigers were able to open up a spot on the 26-man active roster for right-hander Troy Melton, who was called up from Triple-A Toledo to start Wednesday in Pittsburgh in what will be his MLB debut.

Martin (2-8) took the loss Tuesday against the Rays, allowing four runs (three earned) on three hits and four walks while striking out three in five innings.

Martin pitched well outside of a troublesome second frame during which the Rays plated all four of their runs. Excluding the one inning, Martin faced just one over the minimum and ended his night by striking out Yandy Diaz. Martin's record does not properly reflect his performance this season. He now owns a 3.89 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 56:23 K:BB in 85.2 innings and lines up for another start at home against the Phillies next week.

Young (0-5) took the loss Tuesday as the Orioles fell 6-3 to the Guardians, giving up three runs on four hits and three walks over 4.1 innings. He struck out three.

The right-hander got tagged for runs in the first, third and fifth innings, with an Angel Martinez double chasing him from the game after 73 pitches (45 strikes). The three free passes were the most Young had issued since rejoining the big-league rotation in late June, and over five starts he's been pummeled for a 7.77 ERA, 1.59 WHIP and 19:6 K:BB over 22 innings, serving up seven homers along the way. Zach Eflin (back) is expected to come off the IL on Wednesday, with Cade Povich (hip) and Kyle Bradish (elbow) not far behind him, so Young is likely headed back to Triple-A Norfolk.

Ober (hip) will make another rehab start with Triple-A St. Paul on Friday, Dan Hayes of The Athletic reports.

Ober went four scoreless innings while striking out three in his first rehab outing with St. Paul last week. He got his pitch count up to 50 in that start and will get stretched out a bit more Friday. If things go well for Ober on Friday, he seems likely to rejoin the Twins' rotation next week. The big right-hander has been out for all of July with a left hip impingement.

Bieber (elbow) allowed one earned run on two hits and no walks while striking out four over three innings Tuesday in a rehab start for High-A Lake County.

The Guardians planned for him to throw three innings and between 40 and 45 pitches, and the right-hander hit both targets. Thirty of his 43 pitches landed for strikes Tuesday in what was his first start with a full-season affiliate after Bieber threw two scoreless innings in the rookie-level Arizona Complex League a week ago. He'll need to make at least two more starts in the minors to build up his pitch count before he returns from the 60-day injured list, likely in early or mid-August.

DeGrom (10-2) picked up the win over the Athletics on Tuesday, allowing one run on three hits and a walk while striking out nine over six innings.

DeGrom surrendered a leadoff home run to Lawrence Butler to open the game but otherwise was dominant. His nine strikeouts tied for his second-highest total in a start this season, and he recorded 28 whiffs, which tied for the second-most whiffs in all of baseball this year. DeGrom is now 6-0 since the start of June and has lowered his ERA to a 2.28. He's now up to 118.1 innings, which is his most since 2019. DeGrom lines up for his next start on the road against the Angels to begin next week.
