  • Jose Soriano SP | TOR

Blue Jays' Jose Soriano: Inefficient in Jays debut

Soriano didn't factor into the decision in Friday's 5-4 win over the Phillies, giving up two runs (one earned) on four hits and three walks over 4.2 innings. He struck out three.

The start of the game was delayed by two hours due to bad weather, and that combined with any nerves from debuting for a new team may have impacted Soriano's focus and efficiency. The right-hander tossed 62 of 94 pitches for strikes, and after a 1-2-3 first inning he dealt with traffic on the basepaths in every frame, including runners on second and third with nobody out in the fifth. Soriano rallied to fan Kyle Schwarber and Trea Turner before being lifted, however. It wasn't the most impressive performance for Toronto's newest member of the rotation, but Soriano hasn't allowed more than three runs in six straight outings dating back to June 30, posting a 3.03 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 28:12 K:BB through 32.2 innings over that stretch. He'll look to provide more length in his next start, which lines up to come at home next week against the Red Sox.

  • Shane Baz SP | BAL

Orioles' Shane Baz: Winless skid reaches nine games

Baz (4-11) took the loss Friday against the Rangers, allowing two runs on three hits and one walk while striking out nine over eight innings.

Baz was excellent for most of the night, but one mistake was enough to saddle him with another loss. The right-hander held Texas scoreless through five innings before Joc Pederson took him deep for a two-run homer in the sixth, accounting for all of the Rangers' scoring. Baz then retired the final eight batters he faced, but the offense couldn't support him with a turnaround. Despite his ugly 4-11 record, Baz owns a respectable 3.76 ERA with a 1.32 WHIP. He's winless in his last nine starts, going 0-5 with a 3.31 ERA and 1.21 WHIP over that stretch. He's scheduled to make his next start on the road against the Twins.

  • Keider Montero SP | DET

Tigers' Keider Montero: Struggles against Giants

Montero (8-7) allowed five runs on five hits and three walks while striking out five over six innings to take the loss versus the Giants on Friday.

Montero wasn't able to take advantage of a favorable matchup, getting tagged for four runs over the first two innings. A Willy Adames homer in the fifth made it a five-run outing. Montero hadn't given up more than four runs in any game prior to July 27, but he's now been tagged for five or more runs in two of his last three starts. He's at a 3.38 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and 86:28 K:BB across 122.1 innings through 25 games (19 starts) this season. Montero will look to get back on track at home versus the Guardians next week.

  • Max Fried SP | NYY

Yankees' Max Fried: Fans seven in no-decision

Fried did not factor into Friday's decision against Atlanta, allowing three hits and two walks while striking out seven across 6.1 scoreless innings.

Fried got into a bit of hot water in the first inning after allowing three Atlanta batters on base, though he managed to escape the inning unscathed. He allowed just two more baserunners over the rest of his outing, generating 14 whiffs on 90 pitches (57 strikes), though he came away with the no-decision as both teams failed to score until the eighth inning. It was Fried's first quality start since he was activated off the IL in late July, and the 32-year-old southpaw has a 2.88 ERA and 0.97 WHIP over 81.1 innings this season. His next start is lined up for next week at home against the Mariners.

  • Logan Gilbert SP | SEA

Mariners' Logan Gilbert: Gives up two homers in loss

Gilbert (8-7) allowed two runs on four hits and four walks while striking out six over 6.2 innings to take the loss Friday versus the Rays.

Unfortunately for Gilbert, two of the four hits he allowed were home runs, though both were solo shots. He's allowed multiple homers in each of his last two starts, though it's only happened five times all year. This was his third quality start in his last four outings as well, a span in which he has given up 11 runs over 25.1 innings. Gilbert is at a 3.42 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 145:32 K:BB through 139.1 innings over 23 starts on the year. He's lined up to make his next start on the road versus the Yankees.

  • Rays' Drew Rasmussen: Earns fourth straight win

Rasmussen (11-5) allowed two hits and two walks while striking out eight over seven scoreless innings to earn the win over the Mariners on Friday.

Rasmussen struggled just before the All-Star break, but he's won four straight starts since the schedule resumed. During the streak, he's given up just two runs over 25 innings with a 32:5 K:BB in that span. Friday's performance was his seventh scoreless outing in 22 starts this season. Rasmussen has a 2.75 ERA, 0.91 WHIP and 130:22 K:BB through 124.1 innings overall. He's lined up to make his next start on the road versus the Athletics.

  • George Klassen SP | LAA

Angels' George Klassen: Tosses four innings in no-decision

Klassen did not factor into Friday's decision against Miami, allowing one run on four hits and four walks while striking out three across four innings.

Klassen was promoted from Triple-A Salt Lake ahead of Friday's start, his first major-league outing since April 11 and third of the season. He failed to make it through three innings in either of his first two starts, giving up seven runs (six earned) across those two outings. Klassen was better in Friday's appearance, limiting the Marlins to just one run, though he ran up his pitch count to 83 while tossing 46 strikes, and he recorded only nine first-pitch strikes to 20 batters. He's expected to take a couple more turns in the rotation, at least until Yusei Kikuchi (shoulder) is cleared to return from his rehab assignment. Klassen is tentatively lined up to face the Rangers at home next week.

  • Hagen Smith SP | CHW

White Sox's Hagen Smith: Promotion coming

The White Sox are expected to select Smith's contract from Triple-A Charlotte on Saturday, James Fegan of SoxMachine.com reports.

Smith turned in a 4.58 ERA and 1.37 WHIP in 57 innings across 15 starts before moving to the bullpen in July, and he has since given up just one run while fanning 10 batters over 6.1 frames. The 22-year-old will now get an opportunity to contribute for the big club during the final months of the season but is likely to remain in the bullpen to begin his MLB career.

  • White Sox's Tanner McDougal: Joining big club

The White Sox are expected to recall McDougal from Triple-A Charlotte on Saturday, James Fegan of SoxMachine.com reports.

McDougal rose through Chicago's farm system as a starter, but he's worked as a reliever since returning from a forearm injury in July and will presumably remain in that role with the Sox. He owns a 2.86 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 40:20 K:BB across 34.2 innings at Triple-A but has given up six runs in just 8.2 frames following his stint on the IL, so he likely won't receive many high-leverage opportunities in the majors.

  • Parker Messick SP | CLE

Guardians' Parker Messick: Throws seven sharp innings

Messick (9-6) picked up the win after allowing two runs on four hits and a walk while striking out eight over seven innings against the White Sox on Friday.

Messick recorded his sixth straight start with two earned runs or fewer allowed Friday, as the left-hander made just two mistakes, allowing solo home runs to Braden Montgomery and Munetaka Murakami. The 25-year-old logged his most strikeouts in a game since June 23, when he recorded 10 strikeouts, also against the White Sox. Over 23 starts this year, Messick has posted a 2.57 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 136:38 K:BB in 136.2 innings. The southpaw is lined up to make his next start Thursday against the Tigers.
