Giolito won't pitch again this season after being diagnosed with a mild lat strain, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports.

Giolito evidently picked up the injury during his last start Thursday against Kansas City, and as a result, he'll be shut down for the last few weeks of the 2019 campaign. Ross Detwiler will start for Giolito on Tuesday in Minnesota.

Means (10-11) allowed five runs on six hits and two walks over 5.1 innings Monday, striking out three batters and taking the loss against Detroit.

Means got off to a rocky start in the first inning, coughing up a two-run shot to Jordy Mercer before recording his first out. He'd then keep the Tigers off the board until a Victor Reyes two-run double in the fifth. The rookie southpaw has lost six of his last eight decisions and his ERA inflated to 3.65 Monday. Means will look to turn things around at home against Seattle on Saturday.

Boyd was scratched from his start Tuesday in Cleveland for personal reasons, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports.

Boyd will be away from the team for a few days for a family matter. It's not yet clear if he'll be skipped entirely or will simply see his start pushed back by a few days. The Tigers haven't announced their plans to cover for Boyd's absence, but they've temporarily gone to a six-man rotation with Tyler Alexander starting Monday, so they could simply slide the rest of their starters up a day to pitch on standard rest.

Gibson made his second relief appearance of the season in Sunday's 7-5 loss to the Indians, giving up two runs (one earned) on two hits and a walk in his lone inning.

After a stint on the injured list caused by ulcerative colitis, Gibson was reinstated Thursday and was lit up in his return to the rotation, giving up six runs in 4.2 innings. Given that the Twins already had 13 healthy relief options on hand with the expanded September roster, manager Rocco Baldelli's decision to deploy Gibson out of the bullpen three days after starting was surprising. Gibson is still expected to start the next time his turn in the rotation comes up Thursday or Friday versus the Royals, but his usage in relief may provide a glimpse of what his role might be when the postseason arrives.

Sandoval allowed one run on two hits and a walk over four innings Sunday, striking out four in the Angels' win over the Rays. He did not factor into the decision.

After allowing a run in the first inning, Sandoval kept the Rays quiet for the rest of his outing. It was the first time this month that he finished at least four innings, but he's allowed one or fewer runs in three of his last four outings. He'll face a dangerous Astros lineup in Houston on Saturday.

Miley (14-5) allowed two earned runs on seven hits with four strikeouts and two walks across six innings as he earned the win Sunday against the Royals.

Miley had a brutal start to September, giving up 12 earned runs in just 0.1 innings pitched. Prior to those two starts, Miley was on an absolute tear, compiling a 2.54 ERA through July and August while posting a 54:23 K:BB across 60.1 innings. The left-hander finally returned to his old self Sunday, which was definitely a huge confidence booster for someone the Astros need to produce in the playoffs. Miley is expected to take the mound next Saturday or Sunday against the Angels, who are now without star center fielder Mike Trout (foot) for the rest of the season.

Luzardo gave up one run on two hits and two walks while striking out four through three innings to earn the save in a 6-1 win over the Rangers on Sunday.

Luzardo had a ridiculous 10 swinging strikes on only 47 pitches and posted a nice performance to record his first three-inning save. Luzardo has been impressive so far and could be in line to get a start this week. The 21-year-old has a 3.00 ERA and a 6:2 K:BB through two appearances this season.

Bieber allowed four runs on 11 hits with one walk and four strikeouts across 5.2 innings during a no-decision against the Twins on Sunday.

The 11 hits the 24-year-old yielded set a new season high, and three of them left the ballpark, but Bieber still worked around that to keep the Indians in the game and avoided a loss. Bieber already has career highs across the board, so while owners would love to see him add to it down the stretch, anything else he does in his final couple of starts is really just icing on the cake. Bieber is 14-7 with a 3.26 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 245 strikeouts in 201.1 innings this season. He will make his next start Saturday at home against the Phillies.

Montgomery allowed three runs on four hits with no walks and two strikeouts across two innings during a relief appearance against the Blue Jays on Sunday.

His first big-league appearance of the season came after Chad Green opened the game with a first-inning appearance. Montgomery avoided the loss, but he didn't pitch particularly well, giving up at least a run in each of the innings he pitched, including a solo homer. With Montgomery fully healed from a shoulder injury and the Yankees close to wrapping up a playoff spot, it will be interesting to see how much work he receives down the stretch. Montgomery is 11-7 with a 4.30 ERA in 36 career MLB appearances, all of which had been starts before Sunday.

Milone is slated to work behind opening pitcher Justin Dunn in Wednesday's game against the Pirates, Greg Johns of MLB.com reports.

Milone hasn't been deployed as a traditional starter since Aug. 31, and that seems unlikely to change in either of his two or three scheduled turns through the rotation before the season ends. Expect Dunn to cover no more than two or three frames before giving way to Milone, who is 2-6 with a 6.13 ERA and 1.27 WHIP in 54.1 innings since the All-Star break.
