  • Drew Smyly SP | CHC

Rangers' Drew Smyly: May not start Saturday

Smyly, the projected starter Saturday against the Astros, may be used as the primary pitcher after an opener begins the game, Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News reports.

Manager Chris Woodward is considering having Kyle Dowdy or Ariel Jurado, both right-handers, serve as the opener against Houston's right handed-heavy lineup, and then bring the left-handed Smyly into the game. Jurado was a starter in the minors but hasn't thrown more than two innings since April 21. Dowdy has pitched multiple relief innings and lasted three innings in a start for the Rangers but is not stretched out. Neither is expected to go five innings, so Smyly could be in line for a decision.

  • Wade Miley SP | CIN

Astros' Wade Miley: Picks up third win

Miley (3-2) picked up the win against the Rangers on Thursday, giving up two earned runs on two hits over six innings, striking out seven and walking two as the Astros won 4-2.

The left-hander was able to hurl a quality start and pick up his third win of the season while tying a season high with seven strikeouts. The 32-year-old hasn't posted lofty strikeout totals, with 30 in 45.1 innings, but he's provided solid ratios so far with a 3.18 ERA and a 1.10 WHIP. He lines up to take the hill next on the road against the Tigers on Tuesday.

  • Chris Bassitt SP | BAL

Athletics' Chris Bassitt: Strong showing in loss

Bassitt (1-1) allowed three earned runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out nine and walking one across 7.2 innings to take the loss Thursday against the Reds.

Bassitt allowed two home runs early -- one each in the first and third inning -- but held the Reds to just two hits across his last 4.2 frames. He wasn't particularly dominant -- he generated only 10 swinging strikes -- but kept the ball on the ground and required only 93 pitches to record his 23 outs. Bassitt continues to pitch well, racking up a 0.97 WHIP and 2.55 ERA across his first four starts of the season. He'll look to keep that going in his next outing, likely to come Thursday at Detroit.

  • Indians' Carlos Carrasco: Yields no runs in five frames

Carrasco (3-3) allowed no runs on two hits with no walks and six strikeouts across five innings to earn a rain-shortened complete-game victory against the White Sox on Thursday.

The veteran was cruising to a victory anyway, but Carrasco made it through five frames just fast enough for the game to become official before the rain arrived. After a couple rough outings that elevated his ERA close to 6.00, Carrasco probably could've used more scoreless innings under his belt, but the 32-year-old has still thrown three shutout appearances in his last five starts. He is 3-3 with a 4.91 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 56 strikeouts in 40.1 innings this season. He will have a chance to extend his scoreless innings streak against the White Sox in his next start against them Tuesday.

  • Carlos Rodon SP | NYY

White Sox's Carlos Rodon: Surgery decision coming next week

Rodon is expected to decide on a treatment method for his left elbow injury at some point next week, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

After meeting with a doctor last week shortly after he was diagnosed with an edema in the flexor mass of his left elbow, Rodon was recommended to undergo Tommy John surgery to address the matter. The southpaw is set to receive a second opinion in the next few days, after which he should have a better idea of whether surgery and the long rehab that comes with it is the best course of action. A reconstructive procedure would spell an end to Rodon's 2019 campaign and keep him sidelined for the majority of 2020, too.

  • Dean Kremer SP | MIN

Orioles' Dean Kremer: Makes 2019 debut

Kremer (oblique) fired 3.2 scoreless innings for High-A Frederick in his 2019 season debut Thursday, allowing four hits and two walks while striking out five.

Kremer spent the first month of the season rehabbing an oblique injury at extended spring training, but he's finally ready for game action. Once the right-hander is deemed ready, he'll likely report to Double-A Bowie or Triple-A Norfolk.

  • Nathan Eovaldi SP | TEX

Red Sox's Nathan Eovaldi: Has stitches removed

Eovaldi had stitches removed from his elbow Wednesday, Michael Silverman of the Boston Herald reports.

Eovaldi is still weeks away from rejoining the Red Sox, who have not yet divulged a definitive plan for when he will start throwing.

  • Yonny Chirinos SP | MIA

Rays' Yonny Chirinos: Likely bulk reliever Saturday

Chirinos is likely to serve as a bulk reliever following a yet-to-be-named opener in Saturday's game against the Yankees, Juan Toribio of MLB.com reports.

Chirinos has done a solid job in the long-relief role on bullpen days this season, and he owns a 4-1 record, 3.52 ERA and impressive 0.89 WHIP across seven total appearances. The right-hander even performed admirably in his one defeat, limiting the Orioles to three runs across 7.1 innings his most recent time out last Saturday.

  • Tyler Glasnow SP | LAD

Rays' Tyler Glasnow: Opening series against Yankees

Glasnow will start Friday's game against the Yankees, Juan Toribio of MLB.com reports.

The towering right-hander will kick off the three-game set at Tropicana Field, where he owns a 2-0 record and 2.60 ERA over three starts. Glasnow will take the hill on six days of rest in what will be the first matchup between the division rivals this season.

  • Shane Bieber SP | TOR

Indians' Shane Bieber: Takes another no-decision

Bieber gave up three runs on eight hits and one walk over 6.1 innings during Wednesday's 5-3 win over the White Sox. He struck out six but did not factor in the decision.

Bieber entered the seventh inning with a 3-1 lead but was unable to maintain it as the White Sox tied the game 3-3 via three singles and a sacrifice bunt. The 23-year-old has now delivered a quality start in six of his last seven outings. Bieber will carry a 3.32 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 48:13 K:BB into his next start Monday against the White Sox.
