  • Matt Manning SP | PHI

Tigers' Matt Manning: Gaining confidence at Low-A

Manning has been making strides with Low-A West Michigan and has been impressing his manager, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports.

Manning got off to a rough start when he was promoted to Low-A in early August, but he's dazzled in his last two starts. The 19-year-old covered 11 innings in those games, giving up just five hits and no runs. He also struck out 15. "This kid has potential to be a front-end guy, and he's going to be pitching in some pretty big games for the Detroit Tigers," West Michigan manager Mike Rabelo said. Manning rates as the organization's No. 5 prospect, and while it'll be a while until he reaches the majors, there is a lot of upside here.

  • Kyle Gibson SP | BAL

Twins' Kyle Gibson: Strong in Thursday's no-decision

Gibson held the Royals to two runs on eight hits with one walk and no strikeouts over seven innings in Thursday's no-decision.

Despite the lack of strikeouts, Gibson was effective once again after beating Kansas City in his previous start. His season-long numbers still look ugly, but the righty has picked things up over his past four outings. Gibson's 3-0 in that span and has allowed just five runs in 26.2 innings for a 1.69 ERA. He has an excellent opportunity to keep the good times rolling in his next start Tuesday against a Padres offense that's produced the fewest runs in the league.

  • Carlos Rodon SP | NYY

White Sox's Carlos Rodon: Headed for MRI

Rodon (shoulder) will undergo an MRI on Friday, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

Rodon's shoulder tightened up on him during warmups Thursday, resulting in his scratch just 15 minutes prior to first pitch. The White Sox understandably want to get the full picture before determining a course of action; after all, Rodon missed the first three months with left shoulder bursitis. Mike Pelfrey started in place of Rodon in the series finale.

  • Corey Kluber SP | BOS

Indians' Corey Kluber: Strikes out 13 in 15th win

Kluber (15-4) beat the White Sox on Thursday after allowing two runs on three hits with one walk and 13 strikeouts in seven innings.

Kluber was staked to a 4-0 lead in top of the first inning, which was more than enough for the ace to cruise to another victory and improve to 8-1 in his past 10 starts despite allowing a pair of homers in the bottom of the frame. This result also extended Cleveland's winning streak to a franchise-best 15 consecutive games. His team's climb to within 2.5 games of Houston for the best record in the AL has strengthened Kluber's case for a second Cy Young award, with his 2.56 ERA and 12.0 K/9 reminiscent of the 2.44 and 10.3 marks he posted when he captured that honor in 2014. The 31-year-old righty will look to add to his resume in Tuesday's home matchup with a depleted Tigers offense.

  • Carlos Rodon SP | NYY

White Sox's Carlos Rodon: Scratched with shoulder stiffness

Rodon was scratched from his scheduled start Thursday with left shoulder stiffness, Colleen Kane of the Chicago Tribune reports.

The announcement was made just 15 minutes prior to first pitch, with Mike Pelfrey tabbed as Rodon's replacement. This is certainly a troubling development, as Rodon missed the first three months of the season with left shoulder bursitis, but at this point it's uncertain if he will miss additional time.

  • Carlos Rodon SP | NYY

White Sox's Carlos Rodon: Scratched from Thursday's start

Rodon has been scratched from his scheduled start Thursday, Dan Hayes of CSN Chicago reports.

Mike Pelfrey is now set to start against Corey Kluber and the Indians. A reason for Rodon's last-minute scratch was not immediately provided.

  • Kevin Gausman SP | CHC

Orioles' Kevin Gausman: Lasts just three innings in loss

Gausman (10-10) allowed five runs on five hits and three walks while striking out four batters through just three innings during Thursday's loss to the Yankees.

Gausman's game-to-game inconsistency has been maddening, and the 26-year-old righty is now up to a 4.99 ERA and 1.59 WHIP for the campaign. His 8.5 K/9 is an admirable mark, and Gausman had pitched 13.2 scoreless innings over his previous two outings, so the upside is there. Still, it's probably best to just accept him as a high-risk, high-reward start moving forward. Gausman projects to make his next start against Toronto at the Rogers Centre.

  • Sonny Gray SP | BOS

Yankees' Sonny Gray: Grabs ninth win

Gray (9-9) allowed a single unearned run on six hits and two walks while striking out five batters through 5.2 innings during Thursday's win over Baltimore.

Gray struggled last time out, so it was encouraging to see him pitch around eight baserunners and limit the damage Thursday. The 27-year-old righty is in the midst of a rebound showing with a 3.22 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 8.6 K/9, and he's also in a solid fantasy setup moving forward with the Yankees closing in on a playoff berth. Gray lines up to face the Rays at Tropicana Field in his next outing.

  • Marcus Stroman SP | NYY

Blue Jays' Marcus Stroman: Will start Friday

Stroman (elbow) will take the mound for Friday's game against the Tigers, Gregor Chisholm of MLB.com reports.

Stroman was diagnosed with a right elbow contusion after getting struck by a line drive during his previous outing this past Saturday. The right-hander was able to toss a side session Wednesday, and with all systems checking out, appears ready for Friday's series opener after receiving an extra day of rest due to the club's scheduled off day.

  • Myles Jaye SP | CLE

Tigers' Myles Jaye: Could move into rotation next week

Jaye could join the Tigers' rotation next week, likely picking up a start Monday or Tuesday against the Indians, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.

Following the trade last week that sent Justin Verlander to the Astros, the Tigers selected Artie Lewicki from Triple-A Toledo and inserted him into the rotation, but the rookie was never expected to stick around in a starting role for long. Lewicki, who was roughed up for five runs on 11 hits and a walk over five innings in his MLB debut Monday against the Royals, is now up to 146 innings on the season over his three stops, which could prompt the Tigers to shut him down to preserve his arm. Assuming that's the case, Jaye, who has made two solid appearances in relief since being recalled from Triple-A on Friday, would make for the most logical replacement for Lewicki. If Jaye does indeed start Monday or Tuesday, he would line up for a second start next weekend at home against the White Sox.
