Tanaka injury not increasing Yankees interest in Cole Hamels

Yankees sources said the team is nothing thinking more about making a trade for Phillies ace Cole Hamels in the wake of the arm injury to starting pitcher Masahiro Tanaka, according to CBSSports.com Baseball Insider Jon Heyman.

"Not looking," a Yankees source said.

Yankees sources added they suspect the Phillies don't mind having New York connected to trade rumors involving the left-handed hurler since it could increase a potential deal with AL East foe Boston. A lot of baseball personnel still see the Red Sox as the most logical trade partner for Hamels.

Rivals: Rangers' Alfaro, Mazara too high of a price tag to land Hamels

Rival teams told CBSSports.com Baseball Insider Jon Heyman the Rangers should not trade prospects Jorge Alfaro and Nomar Mazara to acquire Phillies starting pitcher Cole Hamels. Some sources indicated that is too much for the Phillies ace.

Alfaro is considered a top-100 prospect by MLB.com (No. 45) and Baseball America (No. 67). He is batting .328 with one home run, six doubles and six RBI in 16 games at Double-A this season. He has a career .264/.328/.433/.761 slash line.

Mazara is also a top-100 prospect for MLB.com (No. 54) and Baseball America (No. 87). He is batting .323 with one double and seven RBI in 17 games at Double-A. He has a .259/.347/.430/.777 slash line in his career.

    Cole Hamels SP | SD

Phillies scour Red Sox chain for potential Cole Hamels swap

Though the Phillies would still insist on top talents such as outfielder Mookie Betts or catcher Blake Swihart as a starting point in a trade that sends ace Cole Hamels to Boston, they are also impressed with outfielder Manny Margot, reports CBSSports.com Baseball Insider Jon Heyman.

The Red Sox remain the favorite to land Hamels due to their talent depth in the farm system and their desire to snag a top-flight starter.

Betts, however, might come with a bit of concern, according to one scout, who texted that though he's a good athlete, "I'm not sure about his ability to hit. You have to hit. He likes the ball in ... can't hit the ball away."

As for Swihart, the same scout reported that he's ready for the big leagues offensively, but not defensively.

Margot is off to a superb start at Class A Advanced Salem. He boasts a slash line of .324/.377/.515 in 68 at-bats with 16 runs scored and nine stolen bases.

  • James Paxton SP | BOS

Mechanical fix helps Mariners' James Paxton get back on track

After three poor outings, Mariners starting pitcher James Paxton bounced back Thursday to have his best outing since his first start April 7. He allowed two runs in seven innings and had seven strikeouts in a no-decision against the Astros.

"He threw the ball just like I thought he was going to throw it," manager Lloyd McClendon said, per MLB.com. "He was very, very good. He really commanded the zone pretty darn good. His pitch count was down where he wanted it to be. It was just an outstanding outing for him."

Paxton had some troubles early in the game, as he allowed the first two batters in the first and second innings to reach base. However, he allowed just one run in the first two innings, and the Astros went 0 for 8 with runners in scoring position in the first three innings.

Paxton, who allowed 21 hits and 16 runs (13 earned) in 13 2/3 innings in his previous three starts, said his struggles were because he was drifting toward third base. On Thursday, he tried to stay more direct to home plate.

"I was just staying on line, being aggressive and going after them with the fastball," he said. "Everything was working pretty good for me today."

  • Chris Sale SP | ATL

White Sox P Chris Sale struggles in loss against Twins

White Sox pitcher Chris Sale had a terrible outing on the mound in Thursday evening's 12-2 loss to the Twins.

In three innings, Sale gave up nine runs — eight earned — on nine hits. Sale faced a whopping 21 batters in the few innings he was in for. Seven of the nine runs came in the third inning.

"Hitting is contagious. You give a team like that some energy and they are going to roll with it," Sale said after the game, per MLB.com. "That's what they did. They took advantage when they could and they got me."

That was Sale's first loss of the season as he's now 2-1.

Sale's next start is projected for May 6 against the Tigers.
