Jason Hammel has been a mess on the mound since joining the Athletics. That mess got worse Wednesday in Houston.

Hammel was bombed for six runs in the first inning and yielded eight in 4 1/3 to lower his record to 0-4 with Oakland. He surrendered seven hits, including home runs to Jon Singleton and Robbie Grossman, while walking three and fanning four.

The right-hander, who has allowed 16 runs and five taters in 16 innings since the deal, will attempt to turn it around Tuesday against Tampa Bay.

Dallas Keuchel stays hot in shutting down Athletics

Astros ace Dallas Keuchel continued to rebound from a miserable slump with his second straight strong outing Wednesday against Oakland.

He will attempt to maintain his momentum Tuesday in Philadelphia.

The Astros are looking to trade DH Chris Carter, according to the New York Post. Carter is batting .212 with 111 strikeouts in 92 games, but he has 21 homers and is slugging .474.

  • Cardinals acquire Justin Masterson from Indians

The Cardinals have acquired pitcher Justin Masterson from the Indians Wednesday, according baseball analyst Peter Gammons.

Masterson had a 3.45 ERA last season, but has struggled badly with his control in 2014. He already has walked 56 batters in 98 innings, after walking 76 a year ago in 193 innings.

  • Taijuan Walker SP | LAA

Taijuan Walker taken deep three times in Tuesday loss

Mariners premier pitching prospect Taijuan Walker continued to struggle at the Triple-A level Tuesday night by yielding three home runs. Included were two by Tommy Field, who entered with just four in 276 at-bats.

Walker did recover after the second Field blast to strike out five of the next six batters and fire fastballs that peaked at 98 miles an hour.

"He dialed it up a little more," Tacoma manager Roy Howell told the Salt Lake City News Tribune. "That's why he's still learning to pitch. Hopefully he'll take that lesson and understand it."

Walker is 4-2 with a 4.14 ERA this season with the Rainiers.
