Justin Verlander to receive inaugural Bob Feller Award
Tigers starter Justin Verlander will become the first active major league player to be recognized with the Bob Feller Act of Valor Award, MLB.com reports Monday. He'll be honored Wednesday.
The award was created to honor the legacy of Hall of Fame pitcher Bob Feller, who enlisted in the Navy for World War II immediately after the attack on Pearl Harbor.
Verlander's award recognizes the work he's done to honor veterans who have returned from Iraq and Afghanistan.
"They face challenges when they return that most people don't understand," Verlander said at the time. "The thing is, these men and women are taught to be brave and strong, and when they come home, they're not going to be the first ones to raise their hands and say, 'Hey, I need help.' We need to go out there and extend our arm to try to help these men and women." -

Justin Verlander Ks 10 in losing effort
Tigers starting pitcher Justin Verlander turned a dominating performance but failed to receive any run support from the offense as he was pegged with a tough-luck loss in Game 3 of the American League Championship Series against the Red Sox on Tuesday.
Verlander allowed a solo home run to Mike Napoli in the seventh inning for his only blemish of the night. He struck out 10 and allowed only one run on four hits and one walk over eight innings of a 1-0 defeat. He became the second pitcher to strikeout 10 or more and allow one run or fewer in three straight postseason starts.
Verlander is on track to pitch Game 7, if necessary. -

Sonny Gray wouldn't have missed ALCS due to thumb
Athletics starting pitcher Sonny Gray, who fractured his left thumb on a Prince Fielder comebacker in the fifth inning of Thursday's ALDS loss to the Tigers, believes he could have pitched in the American League Championship Series if the A's had gotten that far, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Gray hopes to avoid surgery on his non-throwing thumb. That said, he won't know for sure until the results of his Friday MRI are released. He's expected to be at full strength by spring training.
The 23-year-old Gray went 5-3 with a 2.67 ERA over 12 appearances and 10 starts during the regular season with 67 strikeouts over 64 innings. He was excellent in the postseason as well for the A's.
