  • Kevin Gausman SP | CHC

Cubs' Kevin Gausman: Diagnosed with left hand cramp

Gausman was removed from Tuesday's start against the White Sox with a left hand cramp, Bruce Levine of 670TheScore.com reports.

Gausman was seen looking at his non-pitching hand in the top of the fourth inning and was removed from the game in the fifth after Miguel Vargas singled with one out. It sounds like Gausman should be ready to take the ball his next turn through the rotation after surrendering three runs on seven hits and two walks with five strikeouts on 86 pitches across 4.1 frames against the White Sox.

Cubs' Kevin Gausman: Exits with trainer Tuesday

Gausman was removed from Tuesday's start against the White Sox in the top of the fifth inning with an apparent left hand injury, Jared Wyllys of AllCHGO.com reports.

Gausman had to have his left, non-pitching hand, particularly his thumb, examined in the top of the fourth frame, and it appeared to be cramping up on the right-hander. After allowing an infield single to Miguel Vargas, Gausman was removed from the game after yielding three runs on seven hits and two walks with five strikeouts across 4.1 innings. He threw 86 pitches. It's unclear if Gausman will be ready to make his next scheduled start.

  • Giants' Carson Whisenhunt: Tagged for six earned runs in loss

Whisenhunt (3-4) took the loss against the Guardians on Tuesday, allowing seven runs (six earned) on nine hits and two walks while striking out one batter across four innings.

Whisenhunt put the Giants on the back foot early by yielding a three-run homer to Jo Adell in the first inning. Whisenhunt proceeded to give up two runs in both the second and fourth frames, ending his start with 80 pitches (47 strikes) and only five whiffs. He's allowed at least four earned runs in four of his last five starts, and the six earned runs he gave up Tuesday matched a season high that he set July 31 against the Padres. Things won't get easier for Whisenhunt, as he'll take a 7.03 ERA and 1.84 WHIP over 32 innings into his next start, which lines up for this weekend against the Red Sox at Fenway Park.

  • Pirates' Braxton Ashcraft: Cruises to 13th win

Ashcraft (13-5) came away with the win against the Tigers on Tuesday, allowing one run on five hits while striking out four across eight innings. He did not issue a walk.

Ashcraft set the tone Tuesday by retiring the first 10 batters he faced. He gave up a solo homer to Brett Callahan in the fifth, but that was the only blemish to Ashcraft's excellent night, with the latter tossing only 80 pitches (61 strikes) through eight innings while generating seven whiffs and 12 groundouts. It was a spectacular encore to his complete game this past Thursday against the Marlins, and Ashcraft sits at a 3.68 ERA and 1.08 WHIP over 149.1 innings this season. He's lined up to face the Padres on the road next week in what projects to be a two-start week for the 27-year-old right-hander.

  • Braves' AJ Smith-Shawver: Expected to stick in rotation

Smith-Shawver is expected to remain in the Atlanta rotation beyond Wednesday's start against Minnesota, Gabe Burns of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.

Smith-Shawver has been limited to one major-league start so far this season, as he missed extended time at the start of the campaign while completing his recovery from Tommy John surgery. However, he will return to a big-league mound Wednesday, and Atlanta will move to a six-man rotation for the time being to accommodate the 23-year-old right-hander. Smith-Shawver had been pitching brilliantly for Triple-A prior to his promotion Tuesday, allowing just two earned runs with a 23:6 K:BB over his last 19.1 innings spanning four starts for Gwinnett.

  • Bobby Miller SP | LAD

Dodgers' Bobby Miller: Covers three innings in rehab

Miller (shoulder) struck out three and allowed two hits and one walk over three scoreless innings in a rehab appearance Sunday with Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Miller has made all but one of his 37 career big-league appearances as a starter, but he looks to be preparing for a relief role during his rehab assignment. While he's covered multiple innings in each of his first three rehab outings, he's been used out of the bullpen for the last two appearances. The 27-year-old righty has been on the shelf all season while recovering from shoulder and back injuries and may need another tune-up outing or two in the minors before potentially joining the Los Angeles bullpen.

  • Emmet Sheehan SP | LAD

Dodgers' Emmet Sheehan: Back with Dodgers to help bullpen

The Dodgers recalled Sheehan from Triple-A Oklahoma City on Tuesday, Katie Woo of The Athletic reports.

Sheehan will be used in relief for the time being, giving some length to an overworked Dodgers bullpen. The right-hander struck out eight over 5.2 scoreless innings in his last start for Oklahoma City. Sheehan was sent down by the Dodgers earlier this month after collecting a 5.29 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 108:30 K:BB across 95.1 innings at the big-league level.

  • Mets' Justin Hagenman: Kicking off rehab assignment

Hagenman (rib) was sent to Single-A St. Lucie on Tuesday to begin a rehab assignment, Michael Mayer of MetsmerizedOnline.com reports.

Hagenman has been on the shelf all season after suffering a fractured rib during spring training. He's finally ready to pitch in games again and could be an option for the Mets bullpen in September.

  • Josiah Gray SP | WAS

Nationals' Josiah Gray: Cleared to begin rehab assignment

Gray (elbow) will begin a rehab assignment with Single-A Fredericksburg on Tuesday, Spencer Nusbaum of The Athletic reports.

Gray will be making his first appearance in a game since spring training and his first regular-season action since he made three rehab starts late in the 2025 campaign after undergoing Tommy John surgery with an internal brace in July 2024. The righty suffered a flexor strain in March and opened the season on the 60-day injured list, but he's finally been cleared to pitch in games again. Gray could make some starts for the Nationals in September if he can avoid further setbacks as he gets stretched out in the minors.

  • Braves' AJ Smith-Shawver: Starting Wednesday for Atlanta

Atlanta recalled Smith-Shawver from Triple-A Gwinnett on Tuesday.

Per Gabe Burns of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Smith-Shawver will start Wednesday's game against the Twins, giving the regular members of Atlanta's rotation extra rest. It's unclear what the plan is for Smith-Shawver's role beyond that, but it could depend on how he fares Wednesday. Smith-Shawver has looked sharp after coming back from Tommy John surgery, and he allowed just two runs with a 13:4 K:BB over 11 innings in his last two outings with Gwinnett.
