  • Cardinals' Carlos Martinez: Slams door despite shaky outing

Martinez recorded the save Sunday despite allowing two runs on three hits while striking out two over one inning against the Reds.

Martinez surrendered three straight hits to open the ninth inning, but he managed to settle down by inducing a flyout followed by a pair of punchouts to end the ballgame. Entering the day, the 27-year-old had given up just one run over his last seven outings (six innings), so Sunday's performance was uncharacteristic of the right-hander.

  • Alex Wood RP | ATH

Reds' Alex Wood: Handed second loss

Wood (1-2) took the loss Sunday after giving up five runs (four earned) on eight hits and a walk while striking out six over five innings against the Cardinals.

Wood made it through the first two innings unscathed, but he allowed two runs in the third, one in the fourth and two in the fifth before departing. He's made five starts since returning from the injured list, posting an unimpressive 5.92 ERA and 1.52 WHIP with a 21:4 K:BB across 24.1 innings.

  • Jack Flaherty SP | DET

Cardinals' Jack Flaherty: Cruises to seventh win

Flaherty (7-6) received the win Sunday after allowing one run on three hits and three walks while striking out five over five innings against the Reds.

Flaherty gave up his only run of the day in the first inning on a solo home run, but he was able to settle down and fire four scoreless frames before being lifted with a three-run lead. The 23-year-old right-hander has picked up three wins in his last four starts, and Sunday marked the first time since July 26 that he's given up a run.

  • Zack Wheeler SP | PHI

Mets' Zack Wheeler: Goes five innings

Wheeler gave up four runs (three earned) on four hits and one walk while striking out two through five innings in a no-decision against the Royals on Sunday.

Wheeler was spotted an early three-run lead and didn't allow a hit through the first three innings, but he allowed four runs in his final two innings of work. Wheeler's struggles on the road continued, as he has a 4.52 ERA in 73 innings away from Citi Field. The 29-year-old has a 4.40 ERA with 153 strikeouts through 24 starts this season. Wheeler will make his next start Saturday against the Braves at Citi Field.

  • Chase Anderson RP | TEX

Brewers' Chase Anderson: Gives up 10 runs

Anderson (5-3) gave up 10 runs on nine hits and two walks while striking out one through 2.1 innings to take the loss against the Nationals on Sunday.

It couldn't have gone much worse for Anderson, as he was crushed for six runs in his first two innings before a disastrous third inning in which he managed to record only one out. The 31-year-old has a 4.54 ERA with 99 strikeouts through 20 starts this season. Anderson is set to make his next start Saturday against the Diamondbacks at Miller Park.

  • Max Fried SP | NYY

Braves' Max Fried: Strikes out eight

Fried gave up three runs on eight hits and three walks while striking out eight through five innings in a no-decision against the Dodgers on Sunday.

Fried gave up a three-run homer in the first inning but settled down to deliver four scoreless innings to keep the Braves in the game. Fried generated 14 swinging strikes, including seven on his four-seam fastball. The 25-year-old has a 3.84 ERA and 134 strikeouts through 24 starts this season. Fried will make his next start Saturday against the Mets at Citi Field.

  • Dodgers' Tony Gonsolin: Goes four innings

Gonsolin gave up one run on five hits and no walks while striking out two through four innings in a no-decision against the Braves on Sunday.

While rejoining the big club for the first time in nearly two weeks, Gonsolin was expected to have his pitch count limited, so it came as no surprise that he was removed after only 72 pitches and a solid four-inning showing. The 25-year-old has a 3.00 ERA and a 15:1 K:BB through 18 innings this season. The Dodgers' plans for Gonsolin for the rest of the season remain undetermined, but manager Dave Roberts said the rookie will get at least one more turn after Sunday, per Ken Gurnick of MLB.com. Gonsolin lines up to make his next start Aug. 24 at home versus the Yankees.

  • Logan Webb SP | SF

Giants' Logan Webb: Sticking in rotation

Webb will stick in the big-league rotation for now, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports.

He won his big-league debut Saturday against the Diamondbacks and figures to pitch in next weekend's two-game series in Oakland. Madison Bumgarner may be bumped up to pitch during the upcoming Saturday, which would give Webb seven days of rest in between starts.

  • Austin Gomber SP | TEX

Cardinals' Austin Gomber: Throws live batting practice

Gomber (biceps) threw live batting practice Saturday, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports. "Velocity around 89-91 mph," manager Mike Shildt said. "Good to see him back on the mound."

Gomber had previously dealt with a bout of shoulder fatigue that had put a pause in his throwing program, but that has completely subsided. The southpaw is slated to throw another live batting practice later in the coming week and retains a chance of filling a bullpen role with the team down the stretch if he continues to avoid setbacks.

  • Dustin May SP | MIL

Dodgers' Dustin May: Could take over long-relief role

May could fill the long-relief role previously held by Julio Urias, Ken Gurnick of MLB.com reports.

May will come out of the bullpen for the first time Sunday after receiving the starting nod in his first three major-league appearances. With Urias serving out the remainder of a 20-game suspension and reportedly being considered for a starting position in October, May -- whose innings are being monitored down the stretch -- is a logical choice to take over a multiple-innings relief role. He has compiled a 2.65 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 15:2 K:BB over 17 innings with the Dodgers this season.
