  • Mike Soroka SP | ARI

Braves' Mike Soroka: Promotion could be coming

Soroka was scratched from his scheduled start Sunday at Triple-A Gwinnett, giving the Braves an option if neither Julio Teheran (back) nor Anibal Sanchez (hamstring) are able to pitch this week, David O'Brien of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.

The Braves boast many intriguing, high-upside prospects in the upper levels of the minors, but none has shined brighter so far this season than Soroka, a 20-year-old right-hander. Through his first four starts with Gwinnett, Soroka has posted a 1.99 ERA and 24:5 K:BB in 22.2 innings, suggesting that he could be ready for a bigger challenge. At this point, Teheran appears hopeful that the back tightness he experienced his last time out will be resolved before his next scheduled turn Wednesday or Thursday against the Mets. Meanwhile, Sanchez is set to throw a bullpen session and do some sprinting Monday, which could make him ready to return from the 10-day disabled list to start Saturday against the Giants. The Braves will continue to track the progress of both injured hurlers early in the week before making any roster moves, but Soroka may be the leading candidate for a spot start should an opening in the rotation arise.

  • Zach Eflin SP | BAL

Phillies' Zach Eflin: Candidate for Tuesday start

Eflin could be recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley to start Tuesday's game against the Marlins, Meghan Montemurro of The Athletic Philadelphia reports.

Eflin had been on track to start for Lehigh Valley on Sunday, but he has since been removed from the affiliate's pitching schedule, suggesting a promotion to the big leagues could be imminent. The Phillies will have an opening in the rotation Tuesday due to Ben Lively's (back) placement on the disabled list earlier in the weekend, likely paving the way for Eflin or long reliever Drew Hutchison to make at least one spot start.

  • Steven Matz RP | TB

Mets' Steven Matz: Feels good after bullpen session

Matz (back) said he felt good after completing a pre-start bullpen session Sunday, but it hasn't been determined whether the lefty will take the hill for Tuesday's series opener against the Braves, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports.

Despite posting a 6.39 ERA over his past three outings to put his rotation spot in jeopardy, Matz had initially been in line to start Tuesday, when his normal turn in the rotation was due to come up. Matz's back issue has since added a wrinkle to the Mets' plans, however, though the positive bullpen session suggests a trip to the disabled list probably isn't on the table. It will be up to manager Mickey Callaway to decide if Matz will pitch on regular rest Tuesday, or if it would be more prudent to move ace Noah Syndergaard up a day in the schedule. If Callaway opts for the latter measure, Matz likely wouldn't pitch again until a fifth starter is required Saturday against the Rockies in New York.

  • Rich Hill SP | KC

Dodgers' Rich Hill: Suffers setback, won't start Monday

Hill won't be activated off the 10-day disabled list to start Monday's game against the Giants, David Vassegh of AM 570 LA Sports reports.

After initially landing on the 10-day disabled list April 18 with a cracked middle finger on his left hand, Hill has since developed an infection that will delay his return to the Dodgers. Hill, who was diagnosed with the infection after completing a 58-pitch simulated game Tuesday, will likely receive treatment to address the issue, making it uncertain how much further time he'll miss. The Dodgers recalled Brock Stewart from Triple-A Oklahoma City on Sunday and could have him make a spot start in Hill's place Monday.

  • Dodgers' Walker Buehler: Optioned to minors

Buehler was sent down to High-A Rancho Cucamonga on Sunday, Andy McCullough of the Los Angeles Times reports.

Buehler was sent down after tossing five innings Saturday against the Giants. The Dodgers will likely call up a fresh arm to use out of the bullpen for the new few days, seeing as Buehler will need rest following his latest start. In two outings this season, he sports a 1.80 ERA and 1.40 WHIP across 10 innings.

  • Robbie Ray SP | SD

Diamondbacks' Robbie Ray: Departs with oblique strain

Ray exited his start Sunday against the Nationals with a strained right oblique. He allowed one hit and struck out two across 1.1 innings before departing.

The Diamondbacks aren't expected to provide another update on Ray's condition until sending him in for an MRI, but the injury looks like something that could result in him missing time beyond Sunday. The lefty immediately recognized the effects of the injury in the second inning, motioning for a trainer to come and check him out after throwing a pitch to Matt Wieters. If Ray requires a trip to the disabled list, the Diamondbacks would likely have to delve into the minor-league ranks for a rotation replacement, with Triple-A Reno starter Braden Shipley probably representing the top in-house candidate to fill the void.

  • Steven Matz RP | TB

Mets' Steven Matz: Dealing with back stiffness

Matz is suffering from back stiffness, and it's unclear if he'll be ready to make his scheduled start Tuesday against the Braves, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports.

Matz will throw a bullpen session Sunday to gauge how his back is feeling. If he responds negatively, he'll likely be scratched from his next scheduled outing, in which case Noah Syndergaard will get the nod versus Atlanta.

  • Wade Miley SP | CIN

Brewers' Wade Miley: Set to start Wednesday

Miley (groin) will be tabbed with the start Wednesday against the Reds.

The Brewers have decided to add Miley to the starting rotation and move Brent Suter to the bullpen. With Jimmy Nelson still rehabbing from a shoulder injury, Miley looks to become the fifth starter until Nelson's return. The 31-year-old has been battling a groin strain since spring training, but he'll be ready to go for Wednesday's start against Cincinnati. He'll be added to both the 40-man and 25-man rosters prior to Wednesday's game.

  • Austin Gomber SP | TEX

Cardinals' Austin Gomber: Gets call to big leagues

The Cardinals recalled Gomber from Triple-A Memphis on Sunday.

Though he'll assume the active roster spot of fill-in fifth starter Jack Flaherty, who was optioned to Memphis in a corresponding move, Gomber isn't expected to assume a rotation spot during his stint with St. Louis. The Cardinals won't be in need of a fifth starter until May 8 against the Twins, at which time Adam Wainwright (elbow) could be ready to come off the 10-day disabled list. If Wainwright isn't ready to go by then, Flaherty would be eligible to return from the minors, so it seems likely that Gomber will just provide St. Louis with a long-relief option in the interim. The 24-year-old, who struck out a career-high 16 batters in his last outing with Memphis, has posted a 2.45 ERA and 1.19 WHIP in 25.2 innings this season at Triple-A.

  • Jack Flaherty SP | DET

Cardinals' Jack Flaherty: Sent back to Triple-A

The Cardinals optioned Flaherty to Triple-A Memphis on Sunday.

With Adam Wainwright (elbow) hitting the 10-day disabled list last Sunday, Flaherty was summoned from the minors for his second start of the season Saturday against the Pirates. He covered five frames while taking the loss in the contest, giving up three runs on four hits and four walks while striking out two. The Cardinals will send Flaherty back to Memphis to clear a spot on the active roster for fellow Triple-A rotation member Austin Gomber, but it's likely that Gomber will only stick around with the big club as a long reliever. St. Louis is able to get by without a fifth starter until May 8, at which point Wainwright may be ready to return from the DL.
