  • Brandon Bielak SP | ARI

Astros' Brandon Bielak: Hit around by Guardians

Bielak (3-3) took the loss Sunday, allowing five runs on nine hits and two walks over five innings in a 5-0 loss to Cleveland. He struck out four.

After picking up back-to-back wins in his last two appearances, Bielak fell to his third loss of the season Sunday. He allowed a season-high five runs across five innings while giving up long balls to Andres Gimenez and Josh Bell. Though Bielak sports a solid 4.01 ERA through eight starts (42.2 innings), he's struggled with the long ball (1.9 HR/9) and has allowed nine or more hits in each of his last two appearances. His next start is tentatively scheduled to come during a homestand versus Cincinnati,

  • Shane Bieber SP | TOR

    Guardians' Shane Bieber: Blanks Astros

Bieber (5-3) earned the victory in Sunday's 5-0 win over the Astros, striking out nine while allowing three hits and one walk over seven scoreless innings.

Bieber tossed a gem Sunday, tying his season bests in strikeouts and hits allowed. Though he's fallen to a career-low 6.57 K/9 in 2023, Bieber has allowed three runs or fewer in 12 of his 14 appearances to earn a 3.29 ERA and 1.22 WHIP. Bieber's next start is tentatively scheduled to come during this weekend's road series against the Diamondbacks.

  • Clarke Schmidt RP | NYY

Yankees' Clarke Schmidt: Yields one run in no-decision

Schmidt allowed one run on four hits over 5.1 innings in Sunday's 3-2 loss to Boston in 10 innings. He struck out four and didn't factor in the decision.

Schmidt didn't face much trouble aside from Justin Turner's solo shot in the second inning but failed to get a win after Boston's late comeback. After posting an ugly 6.30 ERA through nine outings, Schmidt has registered a 2.33 ERA over his last five starts. He's lowered his season mark to 4.70 next to a 70:19 K:BB, though he's 2-6 and hasn't earned a win since May 19. Schmidt is next lined up for a rematch with the Red Sox in Boston.

  • Brayan Bello RP | BOS

Red Sox's Brayan Bello: Provides quality start

Bello allowed two runs on three hits and two walks over seven frames in Sunday's 3-2 win over the Yankees in 10 innings. He struck out three and didn't factor in the decision.

After coughing up a two-run single in the second inning, Bello didn't allow another Yankee to reach scoring position. The 24-year-old has given up two or fewer earned runs in seven of his last eight starts, lowering his season ERA to 3.78 with a 49:17 K:BB through 52.1 innings. He tied his season high with seven innings pitched and has now thrown at least 95 pitches in six consecutive outings. Bello is next lined up for another matchup with the Yankees, this time in Fenway Park.

  • Angels' Griffin Canning: Fans seven in win

Canning (5-2) allowed four runs (three earned) on seven hits over five-plus innings Sunday, striking out seven and earning a win over Seattle.

Canning coughed up three runs on two homers through five frames. He was then charged with an unearned run after leaving the game in the sixth. After failing to complete six innings in each of his first six starts, Canning has turned in four consecutive quality starts. He's dropped his ERA to 4.56 with a 50:15 K:BB through 53.1 innings. His next start is lined up to be in Kansas City.

  • Logan Gilbert SP | SEA

Mariners' Logan Gilbert: Crushed by Angels

Gilbert (4-4) allowed seven runs (six earned) on eight hits over three-plus innings Sunday, striking out two and taking a loss against the Angels.

The Angels jumped on Gilbert right out of the gate, starting with Taylor Ward's solo homer. Gilbert went back out for the fourth inning but left without recording another out. He threw just 58 pitches and saw his ERA shoot up to 4.38 through 74 frames. Gilbert has been tagged with 12 earned runs across 14 innings over his last three starts. His next start is lined up to be at home against the White Sox.

  • Tylor Megill SP | NYM

Mets' Tylor Megill: Could have next turn skipped

The Mets could elect to skip Megill's next turn through the rotation with team off days on tap Monday and Thursday, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.

Manager Buck Showalter and pitching coach Jeremy Hefner were set to discuss the Mets' rotation plan for the upcoming week following Sunday's loss to the Pirates, but if New York decides to take advantage of the two off days and pare down to four starters, Megill would almost certainly find himself as the odd man out. Megill has fallen short of the thresholds for a quality start in all but two of his 13 outings this season and is sitting on a 5.14 ERA and 1.70 WHIP over 63 innings. Even if Megill is moved out of the rotation just for this week, he could lose his spot to Triple-A starters Joey Lucchesi or David Peterson if his struggles continue much longer.

  • Drew Rucinski SP | ATH

Athletics' Drew Rucinski: Over illness, nursing knee sprain

The Athletics announced Sunday that Rucinski has improved in his recovery from a gastrointestinal illness, but he's now recovering from a low-grade MCL sprain of his right knee, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.

Rucinski suffered the injury during a recent bullpen session and will now be barred from throwing for 2-to-3 weeks before he's cleared to resume ramping up again. Prior to landing on the shelf, Rucinski made four starts and was lit up to the tune of a 9.00 ERA and 2.28 WHIP in 18 innings. He could be facing an uphill battle to make it back from the 15-day injured list prior to the All-Star break, and Rucinski may be relegated to a bullpen role even if he makes it back before mid-July.

  • Cubs' Hayden Wesneski: Allows five runs in loss

Wesneski (2-3) allowed five runs on four hits across three innings to take the loss Sunday against the Giants. He walked one and struck out four.

The four strikeouts were the lone bright spot for Wesneski, as the young righty was hit hard, including two home runs. He now has a 5.33 ERA this season and has allowed 13 long balls across 50.2 innings. With Justin Steele (forearm) likely to return June 17, Wesneski is probably done in the rotation for now. He could shift to a long-relief role or possibly return to Triple-A.

  • Joey Wentz SP | ATL

Tigers' Joey Wentz: Allows two runs in bulk role

Wentz allowed two runs on a hit across 4.1 innings and did not factor into the decision in Sunday's game against the Diamondbacks. He walked two and struck out four.

Wentz came in for the second inning after opener Will Vest retired the first three batters of the game. Wentz pitched well, with his only glaring mistake being a two-run home run by Pavin Smith. It's a step in the right direction, though Wentz still has an ugly 7.23 ERA overall. The righty should take the mound again toward the end of next week against Minnesota on the road, and it's possible he operates as a bulk reliever there as well.
