  • Matt McLain 2B | CIN

Reds' Matt McLain: Timeline for return uncertain

Manager David Bell said Monday that McLain (oblique) is without a clear timeline for a return from the 10-day injured list, but the Reds are hopeful the rookie will play again this season, Sonja Chen of MLB.com reports.

McLain was surprisingly placed on the 10-day injured list prior to Monday's 4-1 loss to the Giants after he was sent in for a precautionary MRI on Sunday and diagnosed with a right oblique strain. The Reds are still in the process of determining whether McLain is dealing with a Grade 1 or Grade 2 strain, the latter of which would necessitate a longer recovery timeline. If McLain's injury is on the milder side, he would have a chance at being available to return from the IL when first eligible Sept. 8.

  • Trea Turner SS | PHI

Phillies' Trea Turner: Goes deep twice in victory

Turner went 2-for-3 with two homers, three RBI and three runs scored in Monday's victory over the Angels.

The 30-year-old shortstop took Lucas Giolito deep twice Monday, sending a first-inning changeup out to left center for a solo shot and later adding a two-run homer to give Philadelphia a 5-3 lead in the fifth. Turner's hitting streak now spans nine games, during which he has batted .342 (13-for-38) with five home runs, two doubles, 10 RBI, 11 runs, one steal, and a gaudy 1.155 OPS. Turner's season-long batting average has risen from .248 to .255 in that same timeframe, still a far cry from his .295 career mark.

  • C.J. Abrams SS | WAS

Nationals' CJ Abrams: Swipes three bags

Abrams went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and three steals in Monday's 6-3 loss against the Blue Jays.

Abrams now has 12 stolen bases in his last 21 games and 37 on the season, fourth most in the league. The 22-year-old shortstop has been swinging the bat better of late as well, going 11-for-43 (.256) with three home runs in his last 10 contests. Overall, Abrams' slash line is up to .253/.304/.413 with 14 homers, 66 runs scored and 49 RBI across 487 plate appearances this season.

  • Giants' Brandon Crawford: Set to hit Tuesday

Crawford (forearm) is expected to resume hitting Tuesday, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Crawford has not hit since landing on the injured list earlier this month, but it appears he is nearly ready to do so. He is eligible to be activated Tuesday, so if everything checks out after he gets his cuts in there is a chance he could be reinstated this week.

  • Matt McLain 2B | CIN

Reds' Matt McLain: Hits IL with oblique strain

The Reds placed McLain on the 10-day injured list Monday with a right oblique strain.

When McLain wasn't listed in the Reds' starting lineup for Monday's game against the Diamondbacks, he was believed to be getting a routine maintenance day. Ultimately, an oblique injury was behind his absence, and he'll now be sidelined for at least the next week and a half. In the meantime, expect Elly De La Cruz to serve as Cincinnati's regular shortstop until McLain is ready to resume playing.

  • Matt Shaw RF | CHC

Cubs' Matt Shaw: Gets bump to Double-A

The Cubs promoted Shaw from High-A South Bend to Double-A Tennessee on Monday, Sahadev Sharma and Keith Law of The Athletic report.

The 21-year-old shortstop has been a quick riser through the Cubs' farm system since being selected with the 13th overall pick in the 2023 First-Year Player Draft in July. After a brief stop in the rookie-level Arizona Complex League, Shaw bypassed the Single-A level entirely and was unfazed by Midwest League competition. Over his 89 plate appearances at South Bend, Shaw slashed .393/.427/.655 with four home runs and a 7-for-8 success rate on stolen-base attempts.

  • Miguel Rojas 2B | LAD

Dodgers' Miguel Rojas: Retreats to bench

Rojas is not in the lineup for Monday's game against the Diamondbacks.

Rojas doubled twice and reached base three times in Sunday's victory over the Red Sox, but he will get a day off to remain fresh for the stretch run. Enrique Hernandez will start at shortstop for the Dodgers on Monday.

  • Matt McLain 2B | CIN

Reds' Matt McLain: Receives rare rest day

McLain is not in the lineup for Monday's game against the Giants.

McLain went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts in Sunday's loss to the Diamondbacks, so manager David Bell decided it was time for McLain's first day off since Aug. 7. Elly De La Cruz will slide over and cover the shortstop position in McLain's place.

  • Vaughn Grissom 1B | LAA

Braves' Vaughn Grissom: Headed back to minors

Grissom was optioned to Triple-A Gwinnett on Monday, David O'Brien of The Athletic reports.

Grissom made just two starts after taking Ozzie Albies' spot on the roster when the latter landed on the injured list with a hamstring strain. With Albies now back in the fold, Grissom will return to Gwinnett to play regularly.

  • Giants' Casey Schmitt: Ends homer drought

Schmitt went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Sunday's 8-5 win over Atlanta.

Schmitt homered twice over his first three major-league games, but that was it for his power until Sunday. The homer drought lasted 71 contests. The infielder is at a .199/.252/.292 slash line with 26 RBI, 23 runs scored, two stolen bases and 11 doubles through 236 plate appearances this season. Schmitt appears to have a lock on a short-side platoon role at third base while providing cover around the infield as a strong defender, but he hasn't hit well enough (2-for-19 in August) to justify a full-time role for a team in the wild-card chase.
