Bills head coach Sean McDermott said Johnson (forearm) will not play Thursday against the Dolphins, Ryan O'Halloran of The Buffalo News reports. Johnson left Sunday's 34-28 win over the Cardinals early and was unable to return. It's not clear how much time the slot cornerback may miss, but the Bills won't take any chances with Johnson on a short week. Cam Lewis took over as slot corner following Johnson's departure Sunday and will likely do so again in Miami.

Johnson started all 17 regular-season games for the Bills in 2023, recording 98 tackles, eight passes defensed and three forced fumbles. Brandon Codrington, Kaiir Elam and Ja'Marcus Ingram are Buffalo's backup corners.

Johnson sat out Thursday's practice session due to a sore quad, Alec White of the Bills' official site reports. Coach Sean McDermott called it more of a "preventative measure" in his comments Thursday. With the team planning on resting most of its starters in the preseason finale Saturday, the next time we see the versatile Johnson may be in Week 1 against the Cardinals. Johnson, one of the league's more underrated secondary players, appeared in all 17 regular-season games last season and posted a career-high 98 tackles, his third NFL campaign with 90-plus stops.

Johnson played in all 17 regular-season games for the Bills in 2023, posting 98 total tackles, including 1.0 sacks, eight passes defensed, three forced fumbles and one fumble recovery. Johnson failed to record an interception for the first time since the 2019 season, but that's splitting hairs when you consider the compilation of other stats as well as the career-high tackle total. He finished in the top 10 among cornerbacks in most scoring systems, and his versatility (he can play cornerback or safety as well as cover the slot) has proven key for a Buffalo defense that finished fourth in points allowed and ninth in yards allowed this season.

Johnson (concussion) is active for Sunday's divisional-round matchup against the Chiefs. Johnson was able to clear the league's concussion protocols earlier Sunday, paving the way for him to take the field for Buffalo's divisional-round clash with Kansas City. He should draw the start opposite Rasul Douglas, who's active despite a knee injury, at cornerback.
