Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel said Wednesday that Wilson will remain the No. 2 quarterback behind new starter Quinn Ewers during Sunday's matchup against the Bengals, while Tua Tagovailoa will act as the emergency No. 3 quarterback, Alain Poupart of SI.com reports. Wilson signed a one-year, $6 million contract with Miami this offseason and has acted as the team's backup quarterback for almost all of the 2025 campaign, but it's Ewers, a rookie seventh-round pick, who has looked more impressive at practice and now gets the starting nod with Tagovailoa benched. That said, Ewers likely won't have much margin for error if he struggles to move the offense early, so it's not inconceivable that Wilson gets a chance to show what he can do under center across the course of the Dolphins' final three regular-season games.

Wilson will back up Tua Tagovailoa during Sunday's game against the Falcons, with Quinn Ewers serving as the emergency No. 3 QB. Wilson and Ewers switched roles last week, but the former had been the primary backup for the first six weeks of the season. Wilson has appeared in only one game this season, completing five of eight passes for 32 yards and rushing once for three yards across nine offensive snaps in Week 1.

Wilson (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's game against the Browns but will serve as the emergency third QB. Quinn Ewers had been promoted to the No. 2 QB behind Tua Tagovailoa, sending Wilson down the depth chart. Wilson technically will be inactive but can enter the contest if Tagovailoa and Ewers are unable to return. The only snaps Tagovailoa has missed this season came in Week 1 when the Colts were blowing out the Dolphins.

Wilson completed nine of 13 passes for 80 yards, no touchdowns and no interceptions in Saturday's 14-6 preseason win over the Jaguars. Wilson followed Tua Tagovailoa into the game and led two lengthy possessions. The first stalled after Wilson took a sack, but he then tallied long completions of 21 and 17 yards on the following drive, which concluded in a rushing score. Wilson appears likely to head into the regular season as Tagovailoa's backup.

Wilson has agreed to a one-year contract with the Dolphins, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports. Per Cameron Wolfe of NFL Network, the Dolphins prioritized adding a steady backup QB option after the issues the team experienced last season when Tua Tagovailoa missed time. In adding Wilson, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, Miami gains an experienced alternative with a degree of upside to work behind Tagovailoa in 2025. According to Schefter, Wilson's pact is a $6 million, fully-guaranteed deal that could grow to $10 million.
