  • Packers' MarShawn Lloyd: RBs to Sit
    By Jamey Eisenberg

Josh Jacobs (Commissioner's Exempt List) is out for Week 1 at Minnesota, and Lloyd should be the lead running back for the Packers. That said, Green Bay offensive coordinator Adam Stenavich said the Packers will use a committee, which should give Christopher Brooks and potentially Kaleb Johnson touches against the Vikings. I have no problem with Lloyd as a flex, but I'd like to see how he performs as the starter, especially since he has one career game in his three-year career. Ideally, Lloyd dominates touches against Minnesota, and then we can trust him moving forward as a No. 2 Fantasy running back or better. But in Week 1, use caution, and Lloyd is just a flex.

  • Packers offensive coordinator Adam Stenavich suggested Tuesday that Lloyd could be part of a backfield committee to begin the season while Josh Jacobs (personal) remains on the Commissioner's Exempt List, Weston Hodkiewicz of the Packers' official site reports. "It's gonna be running back by committee for a little bit to see where everyone is at," Stenavich said. "[Lloyd] definitely has explosive ability, playmaking ability." Though he profiles as the most enticing fantasy option of a backfield group that includes Kaleb Johnson and Chris Brooks, Lloyd doesn't look like he'll be called upon to handle a workhorse role during Jacobs' absence. While Lloyd made it through training camp and the preseason healthy and flashed his upside as both a ball carrier and pass catcher, durability has not been his string suit in the NFL. The 2024 third-round pick been limited to just one career game on account of multiple soft-tissue injuries, in addition to an emergency appendectomy.

  • With both Josh Jacobs (groin) landing on the Commissioner's Exempt List and Kaleb Johnson being acquired by the Packers on Sunday, Lloyd now finds himself in a reconfigured Packers backfield. Lloyd has appeared in just one regular-season game since being selected by the Packers in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft, but with Jacobs out of action for the time being Lloyd is now the top available option on the depth chart. Both Johnson and Chris Brooks -- who excels at pass blocking -- figure to factor into the mix sans Jacobs, but with Johnson just joining the team, Lloyd now finds himself as the favorite to pick up carries.

  • Lloyd carried the ball four times for 13 yards in Thursday's 28-9 preseason loss to the Steelers. With Josh Jacobs (groin) sidelined, Lloyd got the start for the Packers but saw limited snaps alongside other members of the first unit like QB Jordan Love. Jacobs' status this season is clouded due to off-field issues, and nagging injuries are par for the course with him, so the identity of Green Bay's RB2 holds more importance than usual. Lloyd appears to be getting the first crack at securing the role, but he'll need to prove he can stay on the field -- he's played just one NFL game since being taken in the third round of the 2024 draft.

  • Lloyd enters training camp at full health, but Packers head coach Matt LaFleur said Wednesday that the team will "gradually" ramp him up for the season due to the running back's past injury history, Ryan Wood of USA Today reports. LaFleur said Lloyd won't necessarily be on a rep count, but it sounds like Green Bay will take some extra precautions with the 2024 third-round pick's workload, at least during the early stages of training camp. Wood reports that Lloyd took part in team drills on Wednesday, seemingly without any restrictions. With Chris Brooks (undisclosed) beginning camp on the active/non-football injury list, Lloyd currently has a path to work as the unquestioned No. 2 backfield option behind Josh Jacobs and build some early momentum.
